A couple of questions on engine sound...

Ok, I have to admit something.

I hate the sound of my bike's engine. I love the power... the comfort... the look.

Everything about the bike is incredible. Except for that damned engine whine.

I have heard many other XC bikes (both in person and online), and many of them don't have the loud engine whine that mine has.

I thought that I would get used to it. So far, I haven't.

Would installing the PCV/Lloydz intake make any difference? I ask, because there are times when it's much louder than others. I'm not sure if it's becuase the motor is getting more fuel, but it sounds 'throaty' and not quite a whiny.

I don't mean to come off sounding whiny myself. Like I said... I absolutley love the bike. It's just that damned high-pitched whining at anything under 2k RPMs...

That whine is the gear driven primary and I quite like it.
However I do have some nice induction noise from Torquetubes as well as the thump thump from my Freedom Performance sharp radius Slash pipes over the top of the whine.

You can put on louder pipes and you wont notice the whine of the gears in the primary.
It took me some time to get used to the way the motor sounds like a sewing machine but now I kinda like it.
Loydz filter will increase the sucking sound of the air but sounds good.

I feel the same way love everything about the bike except the engine noise. Most days it don't bother me but sometimes the engine just seems so loud its all i can focus on. Can't say i'll ever get used to the noise but i except its part of the machine. When the noise gets to me i just twist the throttle harder focus on my riding and all else goes away... Best therapy money can buy.

When I got my first Vic about 6 yrs ago (04V92TC) I complained about the noises too.Dealer told me it was just the way it was made. After I took the primary cover off I realized he was right.
All bikes make some noises that others dont.
Big Honkers ARE loud ;)

Just tossing this out there, but check your belt tension. The dealer adjusted mine (once) and it howled like a banshee. They'd tightened the hell out of it. I loosened it back to spec, and it helped quite a bit.

The PCV, Lloydz timing wheel, Lloydz Air will alleviate the whine a little. I cruise everywhere I go at 3000rpm. Ride at 3000rpm shift at 4500rpm. I haven't noticed the whine since my first Vic in 2012... The first time I rode one that same whine almost turned me around before I made it a mile.

Travis - I'm curious about your rpm's. It would seem to me you would only use 6th gear if you're going over 80mph. At 65mph I cruise at about 2,500rpm in 6th gear. I generally shift in the range of 2,500-3,000rpm. The engine is never lugging. Currently at 10K miles, I'm pretty sure my engine has never touched 4,000rpm. My bike is stock except for Stage II tri-ovals and performance filter. Is it just your riding style/preference or am I missing something?

you could have a loud bearing on the compensator or even a gear that isn't quit. The bearing you can get from a bearing store ask for high speed. The gear you could find on ebay Vic prices are outrageous.

If you're hearing some whine from the top end, it's most likely the overhead cams. Just the nature of the beast. They sound very different than a push rod set-up. When the engine is properly broken in - after about 10,000 miles - it'll sound a lot better. Plus, you'll probably be used to it by then. :grin

You could always try a different brand of oil....When I got this XC the dealer and I ran it on Vic oil. After switching to Rotella T6 I noticed significantly less engine/primary noise.

Now I'm not trying to pick a fight.
But isn't oil, oil. The difference between all oil is the additives that they add. So how come we all feel that changing oil brands has quitted our motors down and made shifting easier.
Do we talk ourselves into it being better.
