Ok , last week I pulled into my driveway and put my bike in neutral and as I put down my stand and shed my helmet I heard a strange clackety sound from the transmission ... I didn't think much of it and left it at that .
Fast forward to today and over 1000 miles of no clackety sounds this past week , when I arrived home after my 58 mile ride home from work today , clackety / clack only much worse then last week .
It sounds like the tranny is half way between neutral and wanting to shift to the next gear .... Its the only way to describe it . Its like a gear rotating and a piece of metal bouncing off it as it spins . It sounds like a serious issue to me ...
I checked the oil and its full , with 2000 miles on it . If anyone can help me or has had this same issue please chime in , its obviously intermittent and I fear a trip to the dealer will reveal a N.P.F.
I don't know whether to keep riding it until it blows up or what .... It doesn't sound good . It sounds like while idling in neutral it wants to drop into first and blast off the kickstand ..... No other way to describe it .
That sucks Mags. I never even got the compensator fix on my '11, since i understood it was just to quiet the racket. no funky noises after 24k besides the ones it had when it came home. I feel for ya brother. Tell those gimps at the dealer to ride it till it makes some noise.
Will this noise cause damage or is it just an irritating clank . Im not sure I want a pimple face 16 year old splitting my motor in two . Maybe it will go away . (Being extemely optimistic) Thanks for the kind words @Luciferiad .
I am confident it IS the Torque Compensator making the noise . I will call the dealer tomorrow and tell them , and see what they say . On my way to my Moms now so I wont be riding for a day or two .
can you find a 16-year-old spinning wrenches anymore? When i was running a tire shop, the young guys who applied started to look nervous when i told them they were gonna get dirty.
Its weird , I thought I heard something last week , then nothing until last night . I did hard riding in hot weather all week , I was on vacation . Strange how the sound never made a peep until yesterday again .... Guess I will bury my head in the manual so I can fully understand the theory and engineering behind this ....
I too bet it's the torque compensator which is accessible by pulling the primary cover.
In the big picture it's an easy job to fix. Having said all that; intermittent problems are always the hardest to diagnose; especially electrical ones.
I'd just keep an eye/ear on it and ride normally until it presents consistently.
After going to the manual and then to the parts list , Im trying to figure out how this is causing my particular noise ..... Mine sounds like a shift fork type of issue , like im stuck between gears and needs to be nudged to go in ..... Like the shift fork is bouncing off a sychronizer .... I was hoping to fix it before it blows , but at least if it becomes more apparent they will hear it and I wont be wasting my time ...
just thought of this. might be a dumb idea, cuz i'm sore as hell from wrenching yesterday and popped a couple oxy. but did you check the motor mounts? some years back my wife had a cavalier that clunked whenever you throttled it. turned out the bushing in the torque strut mount was shot.
Mine makes the noise just sitting there idling , don't even have to touch the throttle . I also believe our motors are mounted right to the fame , although , I may be incorrect .
Mags,
If the dealer turns you down it shouldn't be a big deal to fix it.
I saw one off a bike at a dealer right after I bought my bike and it is very similar to the unit that HD used forever.
Most likely the belleville washers (springs) have sagged and lost their force.
I think they are about $15 each to replace. There looks to be 6 in there and you may only have a couple in the stack that are out of spec. It's around page 9-23 of the manual. Looks like you will need a new nut also. The compensators are really simple devices, though they work really well. Looks like you need a block of hard wood to cut to size to lock the primary or a 5/16 punch to lock the crank a torque wrench. With the HD ones the springs sometimes get weak but the ramps are always good.
Hopefully it will be the same with yours.
Hi Joe , I read the whole section on this 10 times yesterday , and have good understanding of what needs to be done , thank you for the info . I was originally thinking while I was in there I would replace everything but as long as nothing is damaged or galled I will reuse it . I did see a new nut is mandatory ...
Something to consider Mags...
Under the Magnuson-Moss Act, a dealer must prove, not just vocalize, that aftermarket equipment caused the need for repairs before it can deny warranty coverage. If the dealer cannot prove such a claim — or it proffers a questionable explanation — it is your legal right to demand compliance with the warranty. The Federal Trade Commission administers the Magnuson-Moss Act and monitors compliance with warranty law.
If they won't warranty it there are only a couple of parts to the compensator. It looks almost identical to the one that HD used thru from 1970- 2006. They are a really simple assembly and work good as long as the springs are high quality.
Most likely the bellville springs have taken a set. You just need to replace the ones that have taken a set and the stake nut that holds it together. It's unlikely the whole thing even has to come out. Just the parts that retain the belleville springs will most likely need to come off to replace those springs. You'll also need a new gasket, short piece of delrin rod or oak flooring to fabricate locking tool for the primary drive. Torque wrench that sort of stuff.
Like was mentioned, don't forget to add the oil drain plug washer on the shift shaft when you put it together. Here is a video on replacing the clutch that shows what it takes to get to the compensator nut. You don't need to do anything to the clutch. You will only need to remove the cover which must be done to get to the compensator nut.
Watch the segment from 5 min to 7 min.
It does look much easier than splitting the cases to change out a shifter fork or dog.
Great info and video too!
That washer trick didn't do anything for me, shifter still hung up often.
Washer stops the slop in and out of the primary seems all.
The play was in the opposite direction
They go,through lots of clutches here on the police bikes and als their shifter shafts.....first one these guys have seen with compensator issues
I haven't been to the dealer yet , so Im just being paranoid for the time being , my dealer actually sells NEW bikes with go fast stuff already installed , so I guess I will stop the foolishness but I do want the noise to be more pronounced before bringing it in ....
On a side note , we are going on a ride this coming Sunday with a Harley couple and the guy wants a Vic and wants to ride mine , we have had this plan for a couple weeks ..... And now my Vic sounds like a CRAP CAN ! :ltr: More then likely a lost sale for Victory .

YES , in fact while cornering on my St. at a slow speed , I pulled in the clutch while leaning and it started banging and clanking . I was leaning to the right .
Not convinced this is a compensator issue. When I had mine replaced years ago, it was quiet when cold. When the bike warmed it it was noisy all the time.(In neutral.) If I pulled the clutch in, even when it was in neutral, the noise went away....dealer fixed it under warranty. Upgrade to redesigned 2012 version. No problems in the 30K plus miles put on it since
Yea , clutch feels fine ... NO NOISE when clutch is pulled in unless leaning to the right . NO noise when in gear , only neutral . No chattering , or slipping of clutch .... Noise is loud when it occurs , not sure if I should keep riding or bring it in . If I bring it to dealer and noise does not occur , they will stamp it "NPF" and send me on my way . Dealer is 70 Miles away from home .
Great minds think alike ! Took it for a jaunt yesterday to get the noise going and as luck would have it ........ No Fucking Noise !:crzy: I have tomorrow off and in between working on my house I will get out again , if I get the noise on video I will post it up here too .
I did notice my bike only makes the sound leaning to the right with the clutch IN (coasting) at a slow speed , I have NEVER heard any noise in gear , clutch out , under power . Im Fucking really upset about this ..... I put up laughing , and smiley faces when I post only because I would be crying otherwise ... WTF , I don't need this **** right now . Im a lucky guy , I have a lot of stuff and others may not agree , but I would trade just about everything I have for my BIKE . It understands me !:crzy:
