Default Electrical woes

Thank goodness this happened to me after the bike was safely parked at home, but getting ready to ride to work yesterday, followed my regular ritual of suiting up, turning on the LEDs, turn the key, wait for injectors to prime, then hit the starter switch...

...at which time everything went dark.

Apparently the main breaker blew, and it obviously can take a long time to reset. To the cage into work and in the afternoon came back and checked everything out I could. Battery showing 12.64V, so it's good. Disconnected the LEDs to eliminate as a possible cause, went through the startup again and same result. Starter makes no noise at all - just hitting the switch causes the breaker to trip.

Anyone disagree that this pretty much has to be the starter?

I don't believe a bad starter will trip the main breaker. There is no breaker in the circuit that feeds power to the starter as it draws a few hundred amps when it is turning the motor over. A DC breaker that size would be very expensive.
Darken the room before you try to start it. Do it at night and get it very dark. There is a very slight chance you maybe able to see the flash somewhere when you or an assistant push the start button if you are very lucky.

Sounds like the battery terminals need to be cleaned and tightened.

There was a post a short while ago where the person found that the starter solenoid had come loose and was grounding to the brake line. Maybe this is similar and it is resting against the frame somehow.

Yah, you have a dead ground short.. or a complete lack of a ground, one or the other most likely. Electrical gremlins are the worst to trace.. the only way you're going to find it is methodically. Start from the battery and altenator and work your way outwards. Could even be a pinched wire under the tank or something. Have you done any work on the bike lately? If you've changed anything recently start there and look at all your wiring. Wish there were a silver bullet for this but it can really be a sonofabitch to find electrical faults. Good luck.

how did you wire in the LED's and how did you disconnect them.
Have you washed the bike and maybe have water in switch housing

I dont have a wiring diagram of the Vision, and that would be the best place to start this troubleshooting process. Otherwise it's a poke and a pig. That being said the starter may well be in the picture on this. For ease of description the starter is kind of direct to the battery. One side is grounded to the motor and then a high power large wire goes from the battery to the solenoid (a contact switch) then to starter. When button is pushed a lower voltage closes the solenoid and lets power go from battery to starter. If any of the connections are loose or corroded the full amount of power dont go thru.
Unless you LED lights are direct to the battery I dont think they are at fault. Its worth a clean on the battery connections and the connections on the solenoid.

The LEDs are wired straight to the battery, with the inline fuse on the battery end. Just pulled the wire off the terminal (and of course, re-tightened).

Wash the bike? I've only (intentionally) put water on it twice in four years. I clean with OBS only.

UPDATE: Thanks to all for the suggestions, makes me remember how much I hate electrical!

At this point, nothing is lighting up anymore, so I will be replacing the main breaker thanks to excellent instructions from Pauljp.

And final solution? Replacing the 40 amp main breaker. Total cost $4 and change. Was it the breaker itself or re-seating and tightening all of the connections? No idea, don't care that much. Good learning experience, and most of all, I'm riding again!
