So went down to southern VA this weekend and rode the Back of the Dragon. for anyone that hasn't checked this out and is in the area it is a must ride... 32 miles of awesome curves and switchbacks up and down the mountains of southern Virginia. and its beautiful views as well. there are many stopping points and scenic looks along the way so you can easily split it up. now I just wish I had a go pro mounted so I could show off the ride. check it out online just google back of the dragon.
Thanks for posting this up! I am wanting to take a trip this year (if my elbow pain lets me), and did't want to do the Tail again. I will have to find somewhere west of the area to stay, and make the hwy 16 area a day to itself.
Any suggestions on lodging west of the area?
I would stay in Marion or Tazwel... if you like camping there is Hungry Mother State Park right in Marion at the start of the Back of The Dragon. The back is not as well known as the Tail so prices are reasonable.
The Devil's whip is another great ride in the region, watch out for the "bridge turn", it is a lot worse then it looks.
I didn't make it South this year but I try to get down into VA, NC or Tenn every year to roll around for a few days. I need to get back to the Snake to check out the side roads and find the waterfalls.
I rode the back of the dragon in july. Had a blast. Stayed at hungry mother state
park in the camp burson section. Only side with full hookups.
Looking forward to returning next year.
