My riding buds and me just got back from our Michigan trip.
We started in Duluth Wednesday night and through the U.P. Thursday and part of friday. Crossed the Mackinac bridge Friday about 1130 then rode the tunnel of trees m-119 twice then headed to luddington Michigan for the night. Woke up bright and early Saturday loaded the scoots on the SS Badger and ferried across Lake Michigan. Got off in Mantiwoc Wis. Then rode to Lacrosse Wis. And stayed there Saturday night. Got up and rode the Wisconsin side of the Mississippi River valley up to redwing Minnesota then back home about 630 tonight . It was a great trip. Highly recommend. Just thought I'd share my most recent adventure.
Lots of good ridding in Michigan. I grew up in Midland and spent a lot of time in North woods, Salmon fishing on Lake Michigan. I met my wife in the U P as here family owned a summer house on Manistique Lake so we still go there often. Will be up on the east side of state near Tawas over the holiday. I enjoyed the pics CrookedPinkey. The might Mac is one great bridge. I have not been on that boat from Ludington, but it is on the list. Glad you had and friends had a great time.
I too live in Midland, MI. At least for the summers and only for another few months after which we are moving to the mountains of NC. I've ridden all over the lower peninsula but never in the upper. The riding within about 100 miles of Midland is not very good but once you get up near Traverse City or north of Gaylord, it is pretty great. The Tunnel of Trees that was mentioned and M22 around the Leelanua peninsula are wonderful rides.
In mid August this year, my wife and I are organizing a group of about 20 bikes to ride around Lake Superior. We will all meet at either our place in Midland or the next day at Sault St. Marie, Canade and then spend a week riding around the big Lake. We won't be going very far each day and will be stopping to see lots of sights. I hope it is as fun as your trip through Michigan.
What did you think of the ferry across Lake Michigan. I've never been on it but have been told that by the time you factor in arriving early for the ferry, loading, crossing, unloading, etc. that it doesn't save you any time compared to driving south around the lake. Also, I've been told it is quite expensive. On the other hand, you are riding a ferry What are your thoughts on taking the Badger or the faster boat that goes from Muskegon to Milwaukee?
Wow another Midlander. Can not blame you. Eastern TN or Western Carolinas is on my horizon ( have to get the wife to buy in, but I think that will be easy ) for retirement in a few years. I agree with riding around Midland is flat and bland ( forested some though ) however once I get to West Branch and north it is quite good. I usually ride up there once a year. The UP is a whole different world. You will see in August. The wife and I honeymooned around Superior in 1998, but going on a bike would be heaven. How fantastic for your group.

The ferry was a little on the expensive side, $109 per person but I'd gladly pay double to not have to ride through Chicago. The ride was relaxing. I took a cat nap on the way. It was fun all in all to ride on ship that big. I've never been on the faster ferry but I think I'd prefer the old badger. It was like sailing back in time.
It was pretty fast to load and unload, bout 30 minutes both ends. No big deal I thought.
They also had breakfast for 6 bucks on board. So we sat on the deck and ate in the sunshine in the middle of the lake. The experience was really cool. One of the highlights of the trip.
