Shifting Issue

I have an '05 Vegas Kingpin that, on occasion, has trouble shifting up between 2nd and 3rd gear. When I go to shift gears between 2nd and 3rd, it will "stick" and not shift into third gear. If I try a second time right after this happens, it will shift fine. This is the only scenario where this "sticking" occurs.

I just bought the bike a couple of weeks ago. I did some searching on the forums and I've heard folks talk about "lubricating the heim joints" or "replacing the ratchet shifter" to potentially solve this problem. I'm somewhat mechanically inclined but don't have a service manual and wouldn't even know where to start to do either of these things...

So, would performing either of the above tasks solve this issue ? If not, what other things could be causing this, and how would I fix it ?

Thanks !!

Your clutch might be out of adjust men and you can only adjust it when its over night COLD not some what cold.
Do a search here for a manual you can down load.

Wouldn't a misaligned clutch exhibit the shifting behavior on all gears though, not just one gear (and in one direction only) ?

bent shift fork, worn gear shift ratchet mechanism, bent or distorted shift fork rails, debris from broken parts locking transmission, chipped or broken teeth, best thing to do is open it up and inspect for damage.

No, maybe, no, no, no, no, and absolutely not.

First thing to do is to remove the rod that goes from the shifter to the trans, clean and lubricate the balls at each end, and see where that gets you. If that does not solve your problem. Replace your shift ratchet assembly

I'm not an asshole...I just type that way

KevinX, thank you again - very much appreciate your help Will give this a try.

If I end up having to replace the shift ratchet assembly, how difficult is that to do ? Is that something someone could do on their own or is it a "don't mess with this - leave it to an expert" scenario ?

Hey kjzeusman did you get the issue solved?

My 04 TC is doing what I think is the same thing but as I'm building up RPM's in 2nd I can actually feel the shifter lifting on its own a little then I can't shift in to 3rd. It only dose it if I'm really getting after it.
