I will probably have roughly 170 to 180,000 miles by July of next year. Kevin installed cams in my bike at 11,000 miles and I now have 118,000 miles. I have another engine with 5,000 miles on the clock. If I change my current engine out with those kind of miles would the cams be good to go to install on the lower mileage engine?
I have sent this question to Kevin but I know he has a business to run and he is a busy man. So in the event I don't hear from him I thought maybe someone here may have the knowledge to address this question.
Of course I'm assuming my present engine makes it that long to begin with.
In order to do that I would need the exact measurements of a new set of cams. In addition the knowledge of what amount of wear is acceptable correct? I'm assuming there is a certain wear in when first installed or?
I'd have to agree with others and mention there's too many contributing factors to say without inspecting, measuring and verifying the cams. Even in cars the engine parts can wear differently depending upon how they were treated.
The definitive answer is not no. There are several factors that can sway the answer either way. A big part of the answer is going to be what the journals on your cams look like and how much if any material has been lost in the time it was in your old engine. If the cams are within acceptable tolerances then you can absolutely use them.
They may as well be paper weights but instead of tossing them send them to me and I will cover the postage.
I'd have a engine or machine shop look me over but there's a good chance you can keep running them. Worn out cams I have seen have 8k+ hrs on them. The lobes will get flat spots on them.
I just heard back from Kevin who confirmed what several have said. Stated, they should work just fine.
Thanks everyone.
