Victory Oil-Change Kit - What if it's no longer sold?

This is in regards to the recent news that Polaris is ending Victory production:

I have been using the Victory oil-change kit for my 2016 Gunner. I intend to keep this bike for a long time, in spite of Victory's demise.

My question is, if Polaris stops selling this kit, what is the best oil to use as a substitute?

Does anyone know who actually makes this oil? Also, the oil filter - what brand/size is the filter?

Thanks!

I'm debating on buying like 5 of them and storing them until this is figured out. Given the number of Oil threads out there, this debate will go on for a LOOOOONG time unless Victory/Polaris tells us all what is the new approved oil for our bikes.

Which I doubt they will ever do as they charge an arm and a leg for the "Victory Oil Change Kit"

Rotella T6 5w-40 has been my oil for years... on both my bike and diesel truck.
Wix filter part#51356 or Napa Goal 1356 works for our oil filter substitute.

Oil is the least of my worries with Vic going under....

The manual is very specific that the oil has to be "semi-synthetic". Since I plan to keep this bike for a long time, I just want to be sure I'm buying the right oil.

A friend of mine "supposedly" fried his 106 because he put straight synthetic in his bike instead of the semi-synthetic.

Yeah, Spawn, I thought the same thing... but jeez, 5 of those damned things would be 300 bucks!

Where in the manual does it say that semi-synthetic is required? I am suspect of this because my manual says no such thing with the same motor.

Your friends engine fry had nothing to do with synthetic oil.

#11 ·
the '14 manual says something similar:
Engine Oil Recommendation
Polaris Recommends the use of VICTORY brand Semi-Synthetic 20W-40 Motor Oil or
equivalent motorcycle oil that is approved for use in wet clutch transmissions (such as those
with a JASO MA rating).

#12 ·
Yep, that's my usual problem - I only read the first half of the sentence... (smacks forehead)

But you have to admit, expensive or not, that oil change kit sure is convenient.

I ran full synthetic for years in my Harleys - dumped the same oil in the engine, transmission, and primary. Never a problem.

I'm just trying to make sure I do right by my Victory, now that she's an orphan and all... :crying

Same thing in the manual for my 2012 XR

Engine Oil Recommendation
Polaris Recommends the use of VICTORY brand Semi-Synthetic 20W-40 Motor Oil or
equivalent motorcycle oil that is approved for use in wet clutch transmissions (such as those
with a JASO MA rating).

I had an issue when I bought my bike with the dealership (not a Vic dealership) putting in the wrong oil, which resulted in a burned out clutch slipping faster and a greased penguin on a skating rink.

Read the label on a container of Rotella T-6 and you will find its rated JASO-MA2. That means its good for motorcycle engines, good for wet clutches and good for catalytic converters. It has a heavier additive package for Diesel engines which have a 22:1 compression ratio. Its base is 5W for easier cold starts and a faster flow to the hydraulic lifters. I inadvertently ran T-6 over 7K miles, sent a sample in and the lab report said its just fine and BTW, there's 2500 more good miles left on it. It can't get any better than that.

Rotella T-6 only comes in 5W-40. I'm a bang for the buck guy and can buy Rotella T-6 @ less than $20 / gallon when on sale and with rebates and/or coupons. So I simply can not justify buy other oils at $12 / quart or some such. I got turned onto T-6 when a forum member posted his very impressive lab report.

You know the world will end someday right? No more Victory oil just might "that" sign.

Oh no...say it isn't so! Not Gullible Warming, but no more Victory oil change kits will signal the end of life and the world. We had better fill our garages and basements with those kits to put off that from happening.

I'm still laughing at all the defenders of Vic's oil is the only oil to use due to it's "special" properties!!! Marketing is an amazing trick. How to turn a want into a need. Only use Honda oil in Hondas. Only use kawasaki oil in Kawasaki. Only use Victory oil in Victories. What did PT Barnum say???

#27 ·
Yea, I know you're right about there being many oils that will work perfectly in our Victories. But, I may be near Champion Powersports in Athens, AL next week. They typically sell the 4.5 quart Vic oil kits for $39.99. So, at that price, I see no reason to use Rotella and a Wix filter. I certainly will one day, just not today.

#28 ·
I too would buy Vic's oil kit from my dealer if it were priced at $40. All those nines don't fool me.

*Stay away from the Purolator Pure One oil filter. It is a very good filter but it may be too restrictive for the Victory engine for oil flow. Vic runs at Higher Oil pressure than the puro was designed for.
From 2016 Gunner manual:

"Engine Oil Specifications
Polaris recommends the use of only VICTORY Semi-Synthetic 20W-40 oil, Synthetic 15W-
60 oil or an equivalent oil designed for use with wet clutches (such as those with a JASO MA
rating). "

The keywords above being "recommends" not require, and "or equivalent oil designed for use with wet clutches such as those with a JASO MA rating."

the 15w-60 is the oil now made for the Indian.
JASO MA is not for motorcycles with catalytic converters, JASO MA2 is.

Holy cow. I am impressed. Thank you!!!!

But... once again, I'm confused. (the wife would say this is a permanent state)

Why the short list of oil filters at the top, and another loooong list of oil filters at the bottom?

#33 ·
DamnedifIknow

Did a cross reference search on line and found the bottom list. You can cross reference the Vic filter to any of these. Like I said I'm using a WIX 51356. DamnedifIknow which one I missed but it's probably THE one you're gonna want;-)

don't do it.

Don't use the rotella semi synthetic. It has an additive that can cause the clutch to slip. The full synthetic does not have it and has a rating by the motorcycle manufacturers assoc. I have been using the full synthetic for 4 years. I get better mileage 44 with a passenger. And it shifts better. It is magic and cost 21.00 at wally world for 5 quarts in a jug. I buy an extra quart every other change. With a filter less than 30 bucks a change. Try to beat that.
Peace out hommies

Where did you come up with that? T5 doesn't have friction modifiers so your statement is wrong. If I'm wrong please show me.

the semi synthetic rotella does not have the same certifications as the full synthetic oil un less the formula has changed in the last 4 years. I researched this four years ago. If it changed then use it it will save you a whole dollar. I am sticking to the full. (the semi had a sulfur additive that could cause the clutch to slip.) If I am wrong then the formula changed. Use what you want to, its your clutch. I was trying to be helpful. Just look on the jugs, I did not go to every store that sells it, and change the certifications on them.

I've done oil reports on T5 T6 and T4 (triple T)

T6 sheared the most but did good. RicZ ran waaay over and his tested good

T5 blend did best.

T4 (triple T) came in 2nd.

I wrote Rotella about T5 and no Jaso rating and they wrote back saying it wasn't worth the $$ to get it.
You know Vic oil has no JASO rating..

I like the blend not because of a dollar but because it tested best and to me proof always wins.

Kevin, I've been using Rotella T-6 for years and its working great. Recently, the JASO MA2 rating has bee added to T-6, so now it won't affect your cats...as if it ever did.

#40 ·
Let Vic keep their oil.

Hell they dumped building the Victory line. Let them keep their Victory oil and give our money to other good/better oil companies. I use the T6 and the Wix filters. Last change I started it up with it cold out and the lifters were quiet right off in the cold. I had Amsoil 15w-40 semi-truck oil before and the lifters were a bit noisey on start up with it cold out. Going to stick with the T6. Engine is quieter and seems to shift better. ....also it works out to be less expensive.
:wink

5w40 t-6 rotella. improves the gas mileage and shifts quieter.
