: Quieting the Cam Shaft

I just responded to a different thread about a (whirring) whistling sound from the bike.

My shop said it was the Vic cam shaft which is directly under the tank. When the bike is really warm or at high speeds you can't hear it (much).

The shop said some people had success with Amsoil to help keep it quieter. Any experience with this or suggestions on keeping the cam quieter? I want to only her the chug of my pipes...

It is what is is. Our bikes are gear driven and they make noise. Saying that I've never heard that the cams are the source of the noise.

Yeah, the mechanic said the "whirring" sound when the bike was cold, at idle or in first was from the cam.

It was annoying when trying to show off the bike to a bunch of damn street bikes. I turned her on (:p) and was hoping the pipes would just lay them out (I put on some curb burners). While they were impressed the whirring noise bugged me.

Obviously I haven't be riding my 8ball very long...

That guy REALLY needs to put down the crack pipe. There is nothing in the shape, or drive of the cam that could create a noise. It is the primary. Also if you ride hard Do not use any straight synth oils. the small molecules, and zinc additives will make it so the clutch can not keep up

I wonder what the high pitched "whirring" sound is? Is that the gears? I have riden a gear driven bike and never heard that before...

Not many other gear driven primary drives out there on the market. 99% of the world use a chain for the primary because of the noise. The cut of the gears have a lot to do with how much moise they make. The 92" Vic's sound like they have a blower on them. When they switched to the 100" the cut was switched to helical, and noise was reduced. In 08 the primary cover was redesigned to further reduce it

Can I change out the primary cover from a 07 Vic to the newer type? Is it that big a difference in sound?

Totally different beast, and though it looks the same it will not just bolt on. I wish it would as I would love to swap out most of the drive gear setup from under it as well
