: Kingpin Windshields
mcmu72 03-20-2011, 08:16 PM I just bought a used 2004 Kingpin. I'm looking for a good windshield though and having much difficulty. The previous owned put on an aftermarket headlamp that sets lower on the forks than the original. Also the bike has a nice pullback, drag style handlebar. Has anyone found a good universal windshield that works well with the bike? I was looking at this windshield as a cheap solution (http://www.jcwhitney.com/cruiser-style-windshields/p2000659.jcwx?filterid=c14140d18016y2004j3#) but am not convinced that it would be a good fit. If anyone out there has found a good, reasonably priced windshield, please shed some light on the subject (pictures would also be appreciated).
mcmu72 03-20-2011, 08:27 PM Sorry the lynk to the website was messed up. The windscreen I'm considering is the MAIER MFG CRUISER-STYLE WINDSHIELDS (Type "D"). It sells on JCWhitney for $84.99.
SmattaHead 03-22-2011, 05:31 PM Hey mcmu72
I'm not familiar with the Maier windshield, but that's pretty cheap for a shield, especially if it comes complete with all the hardware.
There are several aftermarket shields that will fit. I have a Memphis Shades Speed Demon which I am very satisfied with. For about $160, it came with the mounting hardware, which can fit several different styles from Memphis Shades for the KP. Some of the Memphis styles are very traditional, while others are smaller, sportier shields, like the one I have. You can also modify an acryllic-type shield by using a jig saw to cut it to the shape/size you want. It really depends how much wind protection you want based upon the type of riding you do. If you are going to travel long distances, you probably want more protection, while less protection if you want sporty.
Look around on the web, check out the gallery here, and search youtube. You may get some ideas.
Good luck, and ride safe!

mcmu72 03-22-2011, 07:28 PM Thanks guys for the feedback on windsheilds. But I'm still concerned about the look of the windsheild with that aftermarket headlight. I'll try to upload a pic so you can see for yourself my concerns. But your feedback is much appreciated. Thanks again.

SmattaHead 03-22-2011, 07:49 PM I see exactly what you mean. My bike has the older, bullet style headlight which is much closer to the speedo. The bottom of the windshield that I have looks like it would be about 4 to 5 inches above the top of your headlight. The previous owner obviously didn't want a shield on his bike. Have you thought about changing the headlight back to either the original bullet style, like mine, or updating to the newer Jackpot style headlight, then adding a shield? More money, but solves the problem.
Nice looking Pin, BTW. How's she run?
Very close to how mine looked when I got her, minus the headlight.
mcmu72 03-22-2011, 08:51 PM She runs pretty good. I bought it from a dealer earlier this month. It been cold here, so I havent had a chance to ride her much. I think I've gotten in maybe 200 miles in at this point. Its an 04 and had 5403 original miles on it. I only paid 6999- seemed like a decent price. Aftermarket grips, bars (I think), headlight, and exhaust. Its loud, really loud. Nice if you want to stroke your ego. Not so nice if you still want to have any hearing left after 30 minutes on the road. So the exhaust will be the next thing to tackle. I've looked into upgrading the headlight to the newer style. Looks like that will run me about 300. The aftermarket headlight I have doesnt look that bad and works pretty well. But you're right, the PO obviously didnt have a windsheild in the plans for this one. Still not sure what I'm going to do yet. Maybe I should check JCWhitney for a cheap replacement headlight and pick up a bullet fairing. I think it would look pretty good like that.
SmattaHead 03-23-2011, 04:42 AM Looks to be in very good condition. Price was right. Very low miles. I would take my time and customize it as you like. I would upgrade to the jackpot headlight for $300. If maintained properly, that bike should last you a long time.
Here is the shield I have:

Congrats, and welcome!
ks_greg 03-23-2011, 08:22 AM Looks like you got a good price on the Pin. Great bikes, enjoy it.
I wanted to add some wind protection to mine also, but couldn't find a shield that looked "right" with the style of the bike. Finally gave in and went with the fairing.
I understand your wanting to save $$, and the Whitney shield looks nice, but I'd have concerns about the stability of it at highway speeds if those two brackets are the only mounting points. Most shields/fairings have two mounting points on each side of the shield.
mcmu72 03-23-2011, 07:33 PM The shield looks good SmattaHead... and the price of the shield isnt as much of a concern as wasting money on an expensive one that wont look right with the bike KS- but your concerns are valid. I have the same concern about that two point mounting system. I'd imagine it'd flop around quite a bit if not perfectly installed. As for the headlight Smatta, I think I'll go with the upgrade. I just hope the PO didnt do a hack job on the wires when he/she put on the aftermarket headlamp. Guess we'll find out soon enough. Better to find out these things now and fix them than out on the open road a couple of hundred mikes from home at night.
mcmu72 03-24-2011, 08:36 PM I wonder if anyone has tried a windscreen for the suzuki m109 on a victory? I found these pics and wonder if one of these screens would work...

catskinner 04-23-2011, 09:30 AM was wondering about your exhaust. anyone know where i can get those straight tube slip-on mufflers that are on this o4 kp? cant afford a complete exhaust right now.
mcmu72 04-24-2011, 07:47 PM Not sure where the pipes are from. The PO put them on ant they are not stamped anywhere. I can say that they were really really loud. I looked forever for a baffel before finally just making one myself. Its still loud, but tolerable now. And BTW, the solution to mt windshield issue was easier than I thought, I just needed to raise the headlight by three inches. I modified the headlight mounting block myself and it works great. Cheap and easy fix to a major PIA problem, looks much better to.
