im currently in japan and am trying to register my 2010 victory hammer 8-ball. however, my bike failed the emissions test. my bike is a california spec bike so it should run lean from the factory. with a few tweaks, it should've passed the inspection. unfortunately for me, i have an s&s air cleaner and had the download card installed. if i take the computer back to stock, it should pass. there is no victory dealer on the island yet so asking victory to do it for me is out of the question. does anyone know if it is possible for me to reset the computer back to stock? if so how do i do it? this is getting pretty expensive (but still totally worth it), and id rather not buy a power commander if i can help it as i dont really have the extra money for all that. help me obi won kanobi! your my only hope! and im lost without my vic!

The only way to go back to the stock flash is with a dealer computer. You could buy a used stock ECM but it may throw a code. The ECM's are VIN specific and swapping them around gets "interesting" quick. My understanding is that if you bought a new ECM it would still need to be flashed by a dealer (even if stock) to set up the VIN in the ECM.

I would try a known stock used ECM from ebay. Make sure it's off a steel frame bike.

Re-smog the bike at another shop, but before you do, add a good fuel additive. Fuel additives are known to be very helpful in lowering emission levels. Run a whole tank if you can with the additives, fill up again, and add fuel additive again, then attempt to re-smog it.

If your bike ran on California gasoline it likely has carbon build-up which will increase emissions and can cause the bike to fail the emissions test. I am not sure what fuel additives (brand wise) are available in Japan, so I will let you do your research on that.

So I just found out that there is no other shop. There is one place that does emissions for Japan. Japan emissions laws are really strict and my bike is reading almost 3% high on emissions. Any ideas on how to fix that?
3% is nothing, and if you do take these 5 easy steps, you should pass without any mods to the bike:
1.) Add fuel additives, and burn a whole tank.
2.) If available in Japan, refuel with gasoline that has 10% ethanol. While we all hate this gas, it has less emissions, and this could help as well.
3.) Re-smog your bike on a colder, rainy morning - the higher the ambient humidity, the cleaner the engine runs. Lower temperatures (60°F) will be better than higher temps (90°F).
4.) Make sure the bike is warm - have it running for at least 15 min before it gets smog tested.
5.) Make sure your battery is fully charged (have it on a trickle charger overnight). A weak battery means a weak ignition spark, and a weak ignition spark will translate into much higher smog pollutants.

Back in the day we had to do that with cars. So we would put in new gas high octain and new oil with new spark pluds Drive straight to emission test you might pass.

Seriously

The one thing I get out of this thread is that I WILL NEVER live in California. This is ridiculous that pada wan has to adjust these types of variables just to pass emissions. But on the other hand if end up needing to pass an emissions test for Europe or japan it is good that I have Crossroads on my side!

FYI, California does not have smog checks for motorcycles (at least not yet), but does have the most strict smog check standards in the U.S. for cages. For motorcycles, California just mandates stricter emissions which are addressed by manufacturers by building bikes with gutted fuel maps - nothing a fuel controller cannot fix. ;)

:ltr: I am here if you ever need me! :D
