brake fluid reservoir cover sleeve & cap

A buddy of mine came up with this simple idea- an aluminium sleeve that slides over the stock reservoir and an aluminium cap that the stock cap fits into.

This dresses up that (in my opinion) out of place reservoir in front of the X bikes. My friend polished his, I crinkle powdercoated mine to match the chin shroud.

They could be polished, chromed, anodized, or powdercoated in many finishes. My brother is a machinist & can do just about anything. On mine we put flutes on the cap & masked the flutes before powdercoating. I'm not 100% happy with the detail on them. Was thinking the flutes would act as an aid in gripping to twist off, but the crinkle finish is all that is needed.

I think this dresses up the bike quite a bit. We are coming up with a price for these, but need to know what you all think. The first pics are of my buddys bike, with his polished pieces. the last ones are my bike with our upgraded version.

Whaddya think?

Hey guys, got a bit of a problem with these, one of the guys I sold one to is having problems sliding the sleeve all the way down. Before shipping them I slid them onto my reservoir to make sure they fit. Some of them took a bit more pressure than others, but they all went on.

I am going to sand the powdercoat off the inside of the sleeve from now on, that is the only thing I figgr could be causing this problem, with the exception of the reservoir having some sort of defect.

These sleeves fit on reservoirs of different bikes, so I think the reservoirs are fairly standard items.

Before I left for work this morning I ment to grab the list of everyone I sold one to so I could contact them & let them know of this situation, but being me, I forgot. So I did my best to remember everyone, & am sending this out to try to cover all bases. Will contact anyone I forgot about when I get home tonite.

Sorry for any inconvience,
Greg

Irv, I don't forsee any issue with the bare metal sleeves, I am fairly sure the issue is with the powdercoat being too thick at the top of the sleeve...

Thanks for taking time to reply tho...

Hey Fish! I just installed my reservoir cover and I gotta say that you did a great job of design, fit and finish. Mine slipped on with a lovely friction fit - both the body and cover. I am so glad I got the black one, IMO a shiny one would be way too obtrusive. I used a small glob of silicone sealant to glue the covers together. I also took some black touch up paint (the kind with a small brush in the cap) and covered the white plastic bits that are visible from the front. That made a world of difference toward making it look high quality. You should recommend that all buyers do that. All in all, I am very pleased.

Thanks Bunches RICZ- yeah, I hadn't yet played with painting that bit of white plastic yet on my bike, but had planned on it. Was concerned about paint sticking to it, I guess that isn't an issue if it worked for you. I was going to use a special paint made for plastic & had not yet picked any up.

I don't know what happened with the one sleeve not fitting, the only thing I can think that may have gone wrong is the powdercoater went real heavy, or maybe the stock reservoir had a defect of some type... I shipped him one that I opened up a bit & it fit just fine.

We are picking up material for our second production run, should be done by the end of next week...

Here's three pics of my black reservoir cover made by fishslapr. Note the plastic bits that can be seen from the front have been painted black. I used black touch-up with a brush in the cap. Also note how the finish blends with that on the cowling. I am very pleased with the cover. thumb upthumb up

Me too! Spendy, but well worth it. How'd that license bracket work out for you Dave?

Got one in Powder Coat without the cap and love it. Had a "fit" problem probably due to a slightly out of round reservoir and Fishslapr came through with a custom resized one! Stand up member.cheers

so if i wanted a polished one you would have to make it?
i dont want to put your brother through all that work. maybe
i can live w/o it. dont have any blackouts on the bike close to
the reservoir anymore.--irv

Irv,

Wouldnt be a problem making one- Actually have a bunch of the sleeves on hand, would just have to turn out a cap & flute it, then polish them.

Let me know if ya want a set...

Thanks, Greg
