Just finished up getting quotes from GEICO and Progressive for a 2011 X/C. I called GEICO first because they insure my current bike. They came in at $364.00 per year. Progressive came in at $239.00 per year. The coverage and deductibles are the same. I was really surprised Progressive came in $125.00 below the Gecko. :D

I've been with GEICO with my last two street bikes, but I'm willing to switch. thumb up Has anyone else had the same experience while comparing the two Insurers?

I have USAA and didn't have much of a choicde; they don't do powersport policies -- they sent me to Progressive. I must say that Progressive is very reasonable, I have full coverage on my 2008 V-Star 1100 custom and my 2011 CR. I pay about $200 per year for both of bikes.

Geico is probably more expensive because of the Gecko; Progressive has Flo who already speaks english -- Geico had to raise their rates to pay for someone to teach the Gecko to speak. :D

Progressive here too. Was the lowest quote on same coverage. Others were even more than double for the same coverage, in my case. It doesn't mean though that Progressive will be lowest for everybody. There are a lot of factors involved. Smart shoppers do their shopping! :)

I have been using Progressive for several years. I do a comparison quote every year and progressive wins every year. My rates has dropped every year for the past 4 years.
My 1800 VTX is $10 a year for full coverage. Can't remember the other 3 right now.
I had a accident in my car a month ago and they have been top notch taking care of me.

DD,
Glad you mentioned something about claims, I was going to ask about that after this thread got a few more hits. I was a little concerned about going to a new insurance company; I had USAA for years and didn't need Progressive until I bought my V-Star.
Good to hear they're easy to deal with. Accidents cause enough stress, nobody should ever have to argue with their insurance company after getting smacked.

Yep. I save a couple hundred per year by switching to Progressive from Geico.

Seems like every three years, whatever ins company I'm with, starts playing games with my rates so start doing a bit of shopping. In this case Geico lost me as a customer for my MC but retained me for my car. Once I told them what was up; the magically came up with a better rate. Next year I'll check back with Geico to see what they can magically do.

No accidents, no tickets, and my credit rating is very good. I should have the lowest rate possible. Yes; your credit rating has a lot to do with your insurance rate.

Progressive is very competitive with motorcycle insurance. If I remember my stats correctly Progressive is the number 1 motorcycle insurance company at this time.

I don't know if you got a quote on line. I am assuming you have no traffic violations or claims that would affect your premium.

Sometimes when quoting on line you are given a generic quote then reports (trafic violations and claims) are ordered when you indicate you wish to proceed with the application. If anything shows up on these reports then the premium could change.

I've been with Progressive for a long time and when someone rearended me in '03' they were on it the next day . He was uninsured and had a suspended license so Progressive had to take care of everything and they even offered me a settlement ! Of course I had to bump them up a little . The end result was that they didn't raise my rates because of it . I'm sold on them .

Been using Progressive for years. Was paying $321 for two bikes. Everytime I check out other companies I find Progressive to be be lowest price. My auto insurance company does not like top insuree bikes and wanted $1,200 for one bike. I am 63 years old with no debt and very good credit. This does indeed make a difference.

The insurance indusrty is very fickle. I quote insurance every 6 months. Why? I had insurance with Markel. They were at least $400.00 cheaper than everyone else in 2006. I kept the insurance through 2010. When I tore Porti down to the frame I suspended my insurance since I wouldn't be riding for a few months.

When I went back they were one of the most expensive. Here is the weird thing. When I priced insurance in 2006 Progressive was $1000.00 higher than Markel.

I am now with Progressive because they are the cheapest by at least $350.00. They are cheaper than Markel by $700.00!

I just got quotes for Angel's car insurance. She will be switching to Geiko because the insurance company she is with now is $200.00 more than Geiko. 6 months ago Geiko was $500.00 more than the company she is with now.

What do you guys have as coverage on your cycle... I know the sky is the limit and low deductables but you need liability and Property Damage...plus you really need some underinsured motorist since there are so many out there...but, what does every have as limits..

50,000...100,000, 200,000 or 300,000

I know it is personal and all but wow, it gets expensive when you get into the 300,000 mark...not so much for Bodily injury and property but the uninsured motorist is expensive!!!!!!

I have $500,000 liability limits as well as $500,000 uninsured and underinsured limits.

One thing to think about- we always assume it will be a driver of an auto that causes an accident. What if riding in a group someone would cause another rider to go down and be seriously injured or a death. I bellieve in higher limits to protect myself in the event of an incident I would be found liable for as well as protecting myself for an underinsured or uninsured driver causing injury to me.

I have this coverage for my 2011 XR:

- BODILY INJURY & PROPERTY DAMAGE LIABILITY: BI $250,000 EACH PERSON - $500,000 EACH ACCIDENT

- PROPERTY DAMAGE LIABILITY - $100,000 EACH ACCIDENT

- UNINSURED/UNDERINSURED MOTORIST: $250,000 EACH PERSON - $500,000 EACH ACCIDENT

- MEDICAL PAYMENTS $5,000 EACH PERSON

As far as having $500k limit for property damage, I think that's a bit over cautious. Honestly, how much property damage can you cause with your bike before it comes to a complete rest? :crzy:

I believe in spending more on bodily injury than property damage, but that's just my philosophy.

Also, I have fairly low medical payments coverage, as I have very good medical insurance through my employer. If you don't have that, then it might be wise to have higher medical payments coverage.

Seeing someone else's coverage might be a good starting point to compare what you have, but always customize your policy to your needs and specific situation. cheers

I have been trying to get my policy from Progressive for a mo now. Everyone says good things about them but!!! Are you all getting your insurance on line or through a agent for this good service. I have a 2012 CCT and am paying round 1200. ayear with no accidents.
Through agent - I have a Mercury multi-vehicle policy, and they have the Progressive motorcycle insurance added in.

Just bought my 2012 XC Wednesday. Called Geico (who I have car insurance through) and they came back with $244. Called Progressive (who insures my current bike @ $78) and they quoted $173 for the XC. Guess which way I'm going?!?! Yup, me and Flo.

Agents can advise you on limits etc. Many times the direct call companies want to issue with state limits- which can be much lower than you need for your protection.

In Iowa liability limits required to protect the other party are 20,000 per person bodily injury, 40,000 per accident with $15,000 property damage. Not much if you happen to cause an accident. I know we always think it will be a car that cause an incident but what if you cause an accident to someone you are riding with. Doesn't take much of a bike anymore to exceed $15,000 if it is totaled. $20,000 doesn't cover much of a hospital stay either.

I don't know how it works in other states but Uninsured Motorist and Underinsured motorist are a must as far as I am concerned. Too many drivers don't have or don't have enough limits to cover me if I am injured.

I have a stand alone policy with Geico that for me was by far the cheapest available. The policy includes maximum coverages with low deductibles for $279 a year. Progessive gave me a $388 a year quote with higher deductibles and no roadside assistance. I have State Farm auto and homeowners insurance, but they quoted me nearly $600 a year. So much for 28 years of customer loyalty at SF. Their motorcycle quote made me want to switch my auto/home to another company. Unfortunately, no one could come close to SF for those other policies. Just have to keep playing the numbers game with everything I guess?

Independent agents write for more than one company. So they are able to compare rates at multiple companies. State Farm is considered a captive so they can only issue policies through State Farm. Rates can be different at each company as you found out.

I had the opposite experience, I have been with USAA for years and years, and when insuring my star-950 was through progressiveforusaamembers.com which is a partnership between the two companies. My insurance on my 950 I think was $17/month for full coverage, but when I added my XCT they wanted $120/month :confused::mad::confused: So I said to myself what the hell, and shopped around and ended up switching all my vehicles over to Geico for a savings of about $1400/year for all 5 vehicles. (Mostly on the XCT with a few dollars here and there on the other vehicles). I saved I think like 27% but it took me more than 15 minutes :D

I have Progressive and I love 'me. They have looked after me pretty darn well when I succumbed to a dumb cager's u turn move.

I am also using Progressive. When I got my Suzuki 4 years ago StateFarm charged me $425 for that first year. Got online after that year and signed up for progressive for $185 a year and now it has dropped to $135. The big shock came when I got online to insure my XR. It is costing me $340 a year to insure it! I know the bike is newer and worth about 4 times what my 06 M50 is but still. May have to see what Geico will quote me.

#28 ·
$340 is pretty cheap, especially if that's a year around price and you live in an area warm enough to take advantage of it (and I think you do).

Having ridden on the street for about 30 years now, I've been fortunate to have only suffered through a couple of minor mishaps. In both cases, my insurers were easy to work with and got things done pronto, those being State Farm and Progressive.

The last one covered by Progressive cost them about 15 years worth of premiums at your current rate. They even covered my helmet. And they didn't even raise my rates.

There is something to be said for getting what you pay for.

I guess your right, still seems like a big jump in price but I think it is probably because of the larger CC difference more than the value. I am fortunate enough to not have had a single wreck (that I reported anyway) in my 20 years of driving and no speeding tickets in about 10 years plus good credit so that helps keep it low. I do get to drive nearly year around, temperatures in this part of the country can vary greatly week by week. I usually even get a few rides in during the winter because it is not uncommon to have a few 70 degree days in January and February but as long as it is above 40 degrees I am usually out there.

Sub liter bikes are cheap to insure, once you cross 1000cc it shoots up in price, just like all the damn V8 engines I love to buy in my cars.
