Default 2012 Cross Roads turn signal auto-cancel issue

I've read other posts with complaints about the auto-cancel feature canceling too quickly. Since my bike began dangerously shutting off my signal, I decided to try an experiment. I found a back country road with a long straight-away... I rode at a constant speed of ~30mph... I put the right turn signal on... No clutching. No braking. No leaning the bike... The flasher will generally flash many times (enough to lose count)... Once in a while when I do this, the flasher will flash only 5 times and then shut itself off... This is happening more and more lately... Since it gives me the 5-flash treatment intermittently, I knew it was not part of the bike's algorithm. I took it to my dealer and their computer found no failure codes logged... There are only 2 modules in the circuit: 1) ECM 2) Flasher Module... One of them must be bad... Any suggestions on how to figure out which one?

19.7 in the manual states that the auto cancel function is controlled by the ECM. When time or distance criteria for signal cancellation is achieved, the ECM takes away the ground signal for the flasher module. Thence the flasher stops input to bulbs. One other thing to check since we are talking about ground, Have you had you bike apart adding things to it? Have you disconnected a harness any place. I would check all connections to and from to make sure vibration is not loosing the ground signal early.. Attachment 8845

We all have a hard time with the turnsignals. Its just something you have to get used to and before you know it they will work the way you want them to.

Interesting mind-set visionjohnny. I just hope my blinker shutting off doesn't get me run over first. 5 flashes and then off doesn't seem like enough flashes for any turn I'm about to make. I almost got rear-ended last week because my turn was another 20 yards after the 5th flash.

I believe my issue is not simply the algorithm Victory chose, but a failure somewhere on the bike.

Gibson, I mentioned your thought to check the ground to my dealer today. He said he would check it tomorrow. It brought to mind one more symptom I neglected to mention: I cannot make it fail when my bike is on and sitting still. I must be moving for it to fail... and the failure seems to always be after the 5th flash.

A quick press flashes longer. The longer the press the less flashes. Hold it longer it won't flash at all

If all else fails, ride faster.

I have to agree with visionjohnny, and blame it on you not being used to it. I don't think there's anything wrong with your blinker, even though your test seems to conclude otherwise. When I need the blinker on for a longer distance/period of time, I just keep an eye on it and when it shuts off, I flip it back on. My previous bike did not have an auto-cancel, and I always found myself blinking long after I've made a turn, due to my forgetfulness to turn it off.

It seems a bit odd, mine flash for about 30 seconds so the only time it bugs me at all is when I sit at a light waiting for my turn to turn and they autocancel.

What strikes me more about your post than you erratic turn signals is the 5 blink thing. To me that makes it sound like NY drivers (who are mostly reported as horrible) allow their blinkers to blink so long. Maybe that's because I've been driving in UT for 10.5 years and have dealt with drivers using no more than 3 blinks. It really doesn't help much that speed limits are suggestions, stop lights are optional, and the police don't stop anyone because they're guilty of breaking the same laws!

No problems with the turn signals here... the auto cancel seems to work very well. I do not remember it ever canceling prematurely. Just from observation it appears that it requires two of the following events to cancel:

-gear change
-one minuet time elapsed
-250 feet traveled
-speed change of +15MPH
-lean angle exceeds XX degrees

I have a XC not the CR, but they are basically the same bike.

Thanks for the posts guys... This 5-flash issue is a recent problem. I'll hope the dealer can get it back to when it was 30 seconds of flashing... BTW, the Victory tech described that the flasher should flash for ~10 seconds before shutting off, provided you're at speeds >20mph.

Depot picker, I'll have to try your suggestion when I get my bike back. I read about the highway lane changing feature being activated with a >2 second slide of the switch, but I didn't realize the flash time varied based on how fast I flick the turn signal.
