With the advent of cellphones, payphones have gone by the wayside. I agree that we shouldn't be subsidizing smartphones or extended personal call plans, but providing people some basic means of contacting authorities or family in an emergency does seem kinda civilized.

If you ever ride out in California, they got the best thing ever. Every couple of miles or so there is a rescue phone, so you are never beyond walking distance to get assistance. Out there, I would think such subsidization would be unnecessary.

...and it's only 'civilized' to buy people houses who don't have one, and of course everyone needs a car, my god, and how do you know what's going on without a gov't provided TV and computer... you liberals don't seem to carry your entitlement state mentality to it's socialist end.

P.S. The european model has been tried, take a look at europe as those entitlement societies 'try' to dig themselves out of the mess they've created.
