Good deal?

Hello everyone.

I joined the forum with my intention on purchasing a Cross Country. I have been working with a local dealer and might have struck a deal today. He has offered me the following :

2012 Cross Country Tour (RED)
MSRP $22499
Fees $570
Trade $4750
Discounts $2000
(I am getting a military discount and I found another dealer at $1500 less, he is going to go in for a $1000 drop to come close)
Tax $980
(I am going to give him $1000 down payment)

Total price is $16500

I told him we would have a deal IF he gave me an AWESOME deal on a rider backrest. I am also going to tell him to drop the extended warranty to $350 and give me the Ipod adapter.

Originally I was not going to get the Tour and go for a 2011 XC but I want so many of the features that it is hardly worth the downgrade.

Does this sound like a good deal? That is $16500 out the door after $1000 down and my trade...

Anytime a trade is involved, it's harder to determine how good a deal it is. For all we know, you could be trading in something with blue book value of $8k, so $4750 would not be good. Or, flip side could be book value $3k...

In my book, any deal you walk away from feeling good about is a good deal. For what it's worth, I bought my '10 JP via email, and after I got the price negotiated to what I wanted, I then worked in 25% off accessories at the time of purchase. The dealer initially did not want to go over 10% off, then 15% off, but I held my ground & after a few back & forth emails, the dealer agreed. I ended up spending $2500 retail on accessories and got 25% off.

All in all I was happy with the deal. I know now, after the fact, that at least 1 member of this forum got a better deal than I did. But, he did purchase later than I did, so the motivation to get the '10's off the floor was probably greater than when I bought.

The bike is a 2005 Honda VTX1300r. The NADA average retail is $5500. High trade was just over $4000 in his 2011 NADA guide.

Otherwise, I am awaiting final approval from his boss about the price off the bike to match the other dealer. Then when he calls me I will go in for a test ride and do some more negotiations.

So whats the $570 "fees" ?
Is that the 500 mile check up?
If so why do we as buyer have to pay to see if Victory made the bike correctly?
It killed me when I bought other bikes and the salesmen all ways gave me that stupid look.

If you get $4,750 for your that bike, you' be actually getting private party valuation.

The lowest I have seen an XCT selling price was right at $20K and that included reductions for one reason or another (like Military) so ignoring the rest of the "fugg fees" you can reduce this equation to a "theoretical" potential low of $15,250 (20K-4,750). If your taxes are close to a thousand then you are at $16,250 as the most likely low. In other words, you should take the $16,500 offer and RUN as fast as you can to the door before they realize their mistake.

I don't know why everyone seems to think that they can "get the dealers best deal" and THEN negotiate more? Isn't the best deal SUPPOSE to be the best you can do? Who knows, maybe I am reading it wrong but you would do well to get the deal done at the values you posted IMHO. Good luck and let us know how this goes.

I am in a waiting process. He needed final approval from his boss before he could give me the extra $1000. His boss wasn't there and couldn't be reached by phone so he is supposed to get in touch with me over the weekend. As for better deal, I referring to some discounts on extra's purchased at the time as the bike..

One thing to remember even though you're in Florida is this is the end of the riding season for most of the USA and all of Canada so there's some extra incentive for the dealer to negotiate.

Now if it was Dec - Feb; the dealer would really have more incentive.
