Pretty wife and I share a flip phone. Yeah a flip phone, remember those? It has been dropped more times than I can count and is finally showing its age by doing some weird stuff and ts time to replace it. We have often talked about getting a smart phone for all the things it can do and therein lies the rub. We have witnessed others go that route and seen them literally get sucked into that attention demanding plastic box, leaving us not too sure if we really want to volunteer for that program.

We know too many who have had to replace their smart phones after only one drop or screens breaking for one of many reasons. Our several year old flip just keeps on ticking until just recently.

Then last night on CBS 60 Minutes, the first segment was about how tech companies design their phone programs to literally hack into your brain and keep you checking your phone very often, at least every 15 minutes or less. Its done with subliminal rewarding that releases chemicals in the brain. It also causes anxiety when the phone is out of sight or a notification alert sounds. Been there, haven't you? You're one of many millions.

So we are getting another flip phone. We have computers, a tablet, cameras and a GPS and it doesn't bother us that they are separate devices. We don't use them that often anyway. In fact, we don't use the flip that often either, just when we leave home. The Kyrocera Dura XTP appeals as its built to Military specs and is extremely rugged and loaded with many usable features. It will even go onto the 'Net and do GPS. No BS!

Hey! I have a flip phone. I get my wife all that other stuff and she likes it, but I only want my flip. Talk and text is plenty for me. I talk to everybody I want to and some I'd rather not.

I would probably get more calls if I stopped answering, "What the hell do you want now!?"

You don't strike me as the type that would be checking your phone every few minutes Ric. But if the flip phone does that stuff it's a smart phone, it has data capabilities. So other than being built like a tank what else about smart phone doesn't appeal to you? I still use paper maps but I tell ya when traveling it sure is nice using turn by turn most of the time. I swore them off for years as well until my old slider just wouldn't work anymore, then the wifey and I went to Hawaii and I found it to be pretty valuable for travel. Just my BS $.02

I'm glued to my phone when I'm not busy with work or home stuff. The wife and I look at lots of porn on our phones. She and I both look at car and motorcycle porn (Craigslist, autotrader, cycletrader, etc) I have my gun porn and this forum porn. She has Facebook porn and home improvement/ gardening porn. This is no BS by the way.
SOOOOO MUCH PORN.

P.s. we have no desktop or laptop, just our phones.

Bully is right, I am not the addictive type - I got off Oxycontin after only 5 days post op, having my chest cracked open. Smart phones do not not appeal to me mainly cuz of their size. I can carry my flip in any pocket, including the Watch pocket in my 5 pocket jeans. When riding, it and my wallet are in the jacket pockets in case of a go down and bike and rider get separated. You all should do do that too.
CBS 60 Minutes must have been watching you, doobliss and your wife when they thought of producing that segment about cell phone addiction.

RICZ......There are "smart phones" out there that will take a beating. I have a Samsung Galaxy S5 Active. I have washed it, gone swimming with it, dropped it in the sink, dropped it off of a catwalk 40 feet above the floor at work and it works great! I do have a Pelican Case for it for added protection. I am brutal with my phone. The phone itself does not have one scratch or crack in it and it is a few years old. It was on my body the night I went bouncing down I-95. The case on the other hand has seen better days. It was mil spec and it really was. I just wish I can still find another to replace this one. Most of the new replacements for this phone are generic, cheap plastic. Just information and food for thought!
