Default Cop Corner

In another land I have a running thread that is a place for police and police related stories, articles, and news. Feel free to join in, ask questions, and share.

I don't know of a better way to kick this off than to add this kind of story. The last few have been sad.

Paralyzed Idaho cop who lost leg in shootout to receive modified Harley
April 7 2017 | PoliceOne Staff News
By PoliceOne Staff

BOISE, Idaho — A paralyzed officer who thought he would never ride a motorcycle again after losing one of his legs is receiving a modified bike from a Harley Davidson dealership.

In November, Cpl. Kevin Holtry was shot five times while searching for a shooting suspect, the Idaho Statesman reported. The shooting resulted in the death of K-9 Jardo and injured Cpl. Chris Davis as well. Davis was released from the hospital in November after being treated for a leg wound.

“When I got shot...I knew I was paralyzed, one of the first things I thought of was, ‘Oh my gosh, I'm never going to ride again,’” Holtry told KBOI.

Along with a custom seat that allows Holtry to get on the bike from his wheelchair, the dealership designed the three-wheel motorcycle with all the controls built into the handles.

According to KBOI, the project will cost around $50,000. The dealership has been raising funds from the community to pay for the project, including through a GoFundMe page and an online auction that is still in the works. But local marketing manager Todd Godfrey told the news station that even if they don’t raise the funds, they’ll gift Holtry the bike at no cost to him.

"It is the least we can do for the sacrifice that Kevin made to the community and we're just excited to get him back on three wheels to get the wind back in his face," Godfrey said.

Holtry told KIVI that he’s grateful he’ll be able to feel a sense of freedom again.

“When I thought I lost that, it was devastating to me, but, now, I'm going to get it back.”

According to the Idaho Statesman, the suspect Marco Romero was killed in the November shootout.

Thanks for that story Bull and thanks for what you and your fellow boys and gals in blue do to keep us safe. I sincerely hope things are better for cops in Houston than they are here in very liberal Portland, where its the cops who wear the cuffs. Disgusting.

Video: Officer encounters mouse in hallway, freaks out
April 5 2017 | PoliceOne Staff News
By PoliceOne Staff

SAINT PETERSBURG, Fla. — An officer received a small surprise recently while walking down the police department’s hallways.

The surveillance footage shows the officer’s encounter with a mouse and his frightened reaction following the run-in.

The mouse, who seems just as terrified as the officer, scurries away as the officer runs the opposite way.

The officer was not harmed during the encounter. There is no word on the mouse’s condition or apprehension.

You must!

As a cop that owns snakes that video made me laugh pretty hard. He would never live that down. He'd get mouse traps for Christmas and cheese for his birthday.

One time on the streets my partner and I had an arrest and were filling out the paper work. As we sat there with a door open a big June bug flew in and started bouncing off everything. My partner lost it and started hitting everything....but the bug. Finally it landed on my partners chest and he froze and just stared at it. I slowly reached over and grabbed it and threw it out. My partner took a deep breath and said "thanks." He was always so calm and cool which just made it that much better for me to see him lose it because of a little bug.

A lot of people have irrational fears of things like bugs and mice. I'm not a big fan of spiders myself but won't let that stop me from smashing them dead.

As a kid I used to see how many Gardner snakes I could catch in a day. Bored kid playing by himself I guess. Now I don't even like to touch them at all. They look evil to me for some reason. Maybe it was the cartoons depicting them as evil so many times or something.

Thanks for this thread. Good stuff and just like our troops; the men and women in blue deserve our support. Some of the videos out there showing just what cops, particularly in the inner city these days, have to put up with. Being called everything but an honest American and can't do a thing about it apparently because nothing happens to the perp's doing all the smack talk in the videos.
