Default Why the news is bad for you

Good article:

https://www.theguardian.com/media/20...d-rolf-dobelli
Explains why the news is irrelevant, how it misleads you, does nothing positive for you, acts like a drug , wastes your time, kills your creativity, makes you passive and is toxic for you.

I think the article is pretty much right on.

I haven't read, won't and don't need to read that article. I stopped 90% of my television 'news' consumption months ago. I now scan headlines, read a few articles and such on a few different internet sites to know what's going on in the US and the world. Most of the 'news" I do watch will be the first 20 minutes or so of a local news cast. It seems way too many people have seemingly lost the ability to think through just about any scenario, critically reason and actually pay attention. Though many of these same people have deep opinions based on the shallowest of any actual facts, logic or common sense.

Oh yea, cut the cable!

I agree. It's some nasty stuff. Sort of like eating ice cream or chocolate bars all day. Funny how untrustworthy the brain can be.

Thanks @BBob for posting this, good stuff, sins 1996 I started flying all over the world and stopped looking & reading news completely, most time coz you just can't understand the local language, and we had other interests in the "evening"

But sins 5 years ago I am a member of " the free thinker group " and like there views on things, coz everything you read is copied & pasted together by people who have there own opinion.... And not actual FACTS, including interviews of goverment / police / common man / there just actually opinions and not facts....

Don't thank me. I didn't post this nonsense. The key is to assimilate the info and read between the lines. With practice anyone can do it proficiently.

Granted, I didn't read the article, just the headline. It was all I needed to read between the lines. Of course the option to stay uninformed is always there. Many people tend to live in a state of somewhat blissful ignorance. If that works for them and is what makes them content and happy; who am I to say it's wrong for them? I just know it's wrong for me. If it's something important to me, something that affects me directly, then I want to stay informed about it.

Edit: Andre; if everything you read is all copied and pasted together then you are reading from the wrong sources. You need to find the original source and start there then branch out if you want more info on any given subject. I like to think all of us here are free thinkers. I see no reason to not give anyone (not on my ignore list) the benefit of the doubt.

A really strong hint something is a total crock is if it's 'Politically Correct'. Right then alarm bells should go off telling the reader something is very wrong.

What passes for news programs are really designed to entertain"news" junkies and promote agendas. The networks continuously milk the subject du jur until another one takes its place. Example; we are no being inundated with the Sexual Abuser outings, but no word now about all those areas that were destroyed by storms and fires just recently. I'm one of those who can "read between the lines" but I resent having to do that.

Sadly, nearly every 'news' channel is actually more opinion of the host(s) chosen spin. The 'shows' that try to have both sides quickly turn into an unlistenable shout fest. I tune out very quickly at the first few signs of political correctness, opinion or positioning. These 'news' shows are simply narrowly Marketed programs for a particular political ideology. Network 'news' is even worse and has been for many decades. Once you get to the point where you know what position someone will take based solely on their political positioning, why bother?

I used to listen to talk radio but even that has gotten so boring with repetition and way too many commercial breaks. Though I love Podcasts and listen to them a lot. Once I started on the Podcast format, tv or radio gets painful very quickly.

It's the same with 'reality' television. The actual 'reality' is that it's mostly Marketing and set up scenarios for the easily entertained. I stopped watching nearly all sports long ago because I'd rather be doing something rather than watching others do something. I like a few of the UFC fights. But then again, none of the hype, just a few selected fights. I don't pay for the Pay For Views so I'll typically follow a few fights on sites like MMA Junkie for the actual play by play.

NFL - haven't watched much except for the Super Bowl in about 40 years, or whenever free agency started.
NBA - was never a fan but I did watch a few highlight reels when Michael Jordon was in his prime.
NHL - typically only the Stanley Cup series.
MLB - usually only the World Series most years.
Boxing - loved it as a kid even though it was so corrupt when characters like Don King, Bob Arum etc. were running (ruining) it
College Sports - never got into them either
Professional Wrestling - loved it as a kid even though I knew right off it was 'entertainment'. Now it's, IMHO, unwatchable and embarrassingly bad. It's mostly sucked since whenever Hulk Hogan turned into Hollywood Hogan. Even as a young kid I thought wrestlers were the some of the world's best athletes, stuntmen and actors/entertainers.

Between work, family, a biker ministry and a prison ministry I have very little time to sit and watch anything on television. Read a paper - no thank you, just not my preferred format.

Head in the sand, hands over my eyes or fingers in my ears - I've never been that guy.

All the best,

Mark
