Default Godawful racket after changing XS650 clutch springs!

Hell what a noise! Thought my bottom end was dropping out or an imminent gearbox failure!!!
Bought a set of aftermarket clutch springs for the XS650 after feeling clutch slip overtaking a car 2 up.
Yamaha supplies no parts for these bikes...zilch!! Nada... none !
Like many old Jappas they rely on aftermarket. ..like we soon will in the next few years....
Those that stay loyal to the breed that is
Ok pulled the primary then undid the 6 clutch screws .
Find the new heavy duty springs shorter! See pic.
Ok well we lathed down some 1.8 thick washers to beef the standard springs a few weeks ago ...sorta worked till I had to pass a car under heavy load to stay with the pack...
So yesterday I fit the new springs with shims and last night after coming home on the Vic the urge struck me to take the XS out for a midnight ride.
Just going up my street heard a strange scraping but it went away.
Couple mile later heading out the valley I gave it a bit ....oh shit it started making a lowgrating rumbling noise I could feel through the pegs .
Felt down low in the engine..
And Id put fresh oil in too and cleaned the filter...
Mains bearings? Or a gearbox bearing?
Limped home at low speed ..
Got in the shed and grabbed a torch...
This is what I found.
These things vibrate being a Triumph copy with both pistons rising and fallling in unison.
Rear chainguard mount broke dropping chainguard onto chain and the sprocket bol ts were hitting it too as it rotated..
Got it off at 1am the gave up...
Leave it off or weld it....

I take it the clutch was fine? I would have solved the spring length the way you did but believe I'd measure the longer ones and find a closer replacement. Just a thought. It really is funny in the end how we assume the freakin motor has bit the dust when all it was, was a darned chain guard. Can't tell you how many times I've done the same sort of thing. Yeah default setting seems to be 'worst case scenario ' sometimes.
Old bikes...seems ya fix one thing then something else happens
Lifes never boring..
Jumping from a 650 to a 1800 and back again is an experience I tell ya.
