The Thomaston Dam
is one of the two "legal" off-road riding areas we have in CT (and the only one open to OHVs). Yesterday as I plan to do most Wednesdays I took the XTR to the Dam for a rip. Up until this point I've been riding with a guy I know from work with who's been enduro racing all his life and a group of his racer buddies or alone. The racers pushed me too hard and got my novice ass into some sticky situations, frankly they were making my riding miserable. Luckily I took the initiative and started going out alone, which gave me the opportunity to get to learn the XTR and practice off-road riding without being in "survival mode". I've also been working to get the suspension dialed-in. Before yesterday's ride, I had set the sag properly(I needed a lot more pre-load) and adjusted the bars forward, turns out both of these adjustments made a huge performance difference.
So when I met Jeff my bike's was setup good to go.... While unloading in the lot, a man around my age pulled up and we started BS'ing and found out we were pretty much on the same page about trail riding. Jeff invited me to ride with him and he'd show me the good stuff in the Dam's trail system. So we hit the dirt, Jeff on his KTM 300 6Days and me on the XTR250
within 5mins I knew this guy was my type of rider. We were definitely on the same page and ended up spinning around the Dam's trails for a solid 3 hours together having a blast
Since I was the newbie there, so I followed and have to say the Pitster handled everything well, I had no issues going were the KTM went or keeping us together. I feel like I got to find another level of the XTR's capability. I guess like road riding, its okay to go it alone but so damn much more fun when shared
