Default Poker Runs

The Elks Club has a poker run today for Veterans. I've ridden the route many times, but I have a couple of friends in the Elks that want me to ride it and the 3 of us are Veterans. The thang is I hate doing poker runs and have done many of them over the years. I have even organize a couple to help friends with medical bills and funeral expenses. Years ago they where fun getting together with the riding community for a cause. But back then I new 30 or 40 of the people riding, now I know 3 or 4. Those days have passed me by it's a time when I was younger. It's just not fun anymore, I don't even like going to bars anymore and I spent many hours in bars. All the waitresses and bar tenders knew me by name and I knew theirs. They would fix my drink as soon as I walked in the door. There was many times they would close the bar, lock the doors and a special few of us would party until day light. But again those days are gone, I got old and grew up a little. Getting old is not a option, but growing up is. I ain't going on the poker run. I'll ride by and pay the entry fee have a drink then come home.

I've never done one, I'm not a drinker (especially if I'm riding). When I go for a ride I want to ride not stop and chit chat every few miles.

I can relate to everything you said NAB. Been there done that too.

A lot of things just aren't fun anymore. I had more fun going to a car show today than any bike run I've been on recently (last couple of years). I still ride and like it though so I'm keeping the two wheeled horses. The irony of also having a 'pony' car didn't get by me either. Hehehe...

We all change as we get older and our priorities change. Sometimes a little and sometimes a lot.

It's all good. Change is good as well as inevitable. A saying I came up many decades ago: "The only thing that doesn't change is the fact that everything changes". Even Mt. Rushmore is slowly changing or any mountain for that matter.

Now if we could just figure out a way to stop all those new aches and pains that come from getting, uh, more mature. (I didn't want to use the "old" word)

I do 3 or 4 Victory rallies each year. I enjoy them and riding in different areas. What I donít like is local charity rides with 500 idiots on Harleys and many long stops for no apparent reason.

Yeah, I hear all of you and I echo those sentiments. Having started riding in 1952, been there, done that. Not mentioned was group riding -- I used to do after meeting rides in groups as large as 20 and poker runs and thought of that as fun. No more. I am most content now riding with smaller groups or better, just one good friend. Usually to lunch somewhere, where we talk at length about cabbages and kings and solve world problems.
Yes, we do change as the years progress, and I just made a huge one converting to three wheels. It hasn't changed a much, other than not having to put my feet down to hold a bike up at stops and no fear of parking lot drops. I will still ride with my clubs and friends and take my Sweetie or grand kids or great grand kids for rides and treats.
