Question Braking concern

I have a 2012 Vision with about 3500 miles so far. Occasionally, the brakes seem to stop functioning for a short duration while stopping. This occurs when I am expecting to stop or slow enough to select 1st gear. I will disengage the clutch, apply the brakes and start dropping through the gears. The clutch is disengaged during this period. When I drop from 2nd to 1st the brakes seem to stop functioning. We are talking a second or less in time but enough to go a foot or two. But today, it happened again and lasted longer. I think I may have gone 5 or 6 feet.

It happens infrequently enough that it always surprises me. I have tried to reproduce this thinking it has something to do with all the electronics on vehicles today and maybe I didn't close the throttle in a timely manner or completely. How fast am I slowing down or front brake/rear brake?

Anyway, has anyone else noticed this or can give me some idea what is going on?

I am scheduled to see dealer in a week for routine maintenance before a trip. This question will be on the list.

Unless you don't plan to ride the bike until your dealer visit, you should take it in sooner. Brakes are important.

Please add your bike's year and model to your signature. Here's why.

Sounds like the system has an air bubble in it... probably near the front right caliper. Bleed your brakes good and the problem will go away... unless you have a system leak... fluid doesn't necessarily leak out but air leaks in. Check the pressure switch in the front well and see if it is leaking when you push the pedal.

Cool Again

It happened again this morning. I am used to using the gears to slow down and this morning I was doing just that and expecting to make a quick stop and go. I had down shifted to 3rd and then held the clutch in while going to 1st. It's a split second event and it seems to affect the motor as well as the brakes. I know. I'm crazy. But there is a silence that comes with the lack of brakes. Other than that brief moment, the brakes are strong and work very well. I don't think it is a brake fluid problem or I would experience this at other times. But I'll check it out. I'll make a call to the dealer. Thanks for the replies. Hopefully my next post will be a resolution.

Both front and rear do the same thing at the same time?

Vision's brakes are linked, so by default it would (should) be happening on both. If I understand linked brakes correctly.

In addition they are ABS brakes, which throws a whole other cog in the mix. I would get that ride into the dealer pronto. As CR pointed out, they're just a touch important. It's only going to take them failing once, possibly resulting in something catastrophic that I would rather not read about. Keep yourself safe Clay.

Cool dealer

I will have the Vision looked at next Friday. The shop says there is no connection between the engine and the brakes. My curiosity wants to at least be able to describe this more accurately. Later.

I'd bet it's one of your ABS sensors! When I had a bad sensor, every now and then it would do exactly as you describe. Replaced the bad sensor, and no more problems. Is your ABS indicator lamp working as expected? If it's amber all the time, that indicates a problem. It should go out upon first traveling above 6 mph, and then stay out until the bike is restarted.

Default sensor

The ABS indicator glows when I start the engine and goes out after shortly after I start moving and remains unlit.

It's good to hear someone with a similar experience. I thought I was losing it.
