Default starter problems

Anyone ever have starter problems on your vision, I was going to change the oil, and it wouldn't start just click, I had the battery and solenoid checked, they were both good, I cleaned all the connections, still does the same thing. I'm thinking the starter must be locked up, I'm hoping if it is that it's covered by the extended warranty, but that thing is hard to get on A trailer when it won't run, so I was wondering if one of you guys have had this problem and could give me some idea about what it could be. Thanks Larry

Sorry to hear the problem Jack. What year you got? I had mine go out within 6 months/7k on my 2011 which was first attributed to battery but that was not the issue (now have a spare sitting on the trickle charger). Covered under warrenty (bought bike new oct 2012) with no issues. Two other Vic riders I know of both with 11's had same within first year of new bike. Shoot for the shop first as I remember its about 300 for a new one.

If you get a chance, update your sig with model/year/location and we can help faster and easier. Let us know what you find...

What is your battery Voltage? How did you have the battery and relay tested?

Please add your bike's year and model to your signature. Here's why.

Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation.

O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

Have you checked the voltage at the starter while trying to start?
I would check the battery voltage before starting, during starting, and check the voltage right at the starter.

These readings can tell you a lot about what might be wrong.
Battery voltage should really be over 12.25 before trying to start it.
Battery voltage should drop some during starting, usually not below 10 volts, though. If the voltage does not drop on the battery terminal it means that the starter is not getting loaded on - bad wiring, starter or solenoid/relay. If it drops a whole lot, then it can be a locked engine, or a bad starter, loading the good battery down.

Check the voltage at the starter terminal. Is it getting battery voltage? If not, then it may be a bad connection, wire or bad solenoid.

Some readings from an apparently healthy 2004 Kingpin; it has a month old AGM battery from a Friendly Local Auto Parts Store (FLAPS).
With the battery on a Jr battery tender it read 13.25 volts.
When the tender was removed, it still read 13.25 volts.
When the key was turned to ON, with the kill switch off, 12.75 volts.
When the kill switch was turned ON as well, 12.6 volts (fuel pump running, Fluke set to capture and display minimum volts.)
When the starter was engaged, 10.6 volts minimum capture.
Kill the bike, put the fluke on the starter itself, it looked as if minimum voltage indicated was 9.7 volts or so. This could not be read with the fluke capture mode, so I tried several times -this is the lowest non-zero reading I got, but it is still suspect, in my opinion. This would be best determined with an O'scope.

On cars, generally if the engine is locked, and everything else is healthy, I see as low as 7.x volts at the starter with a healthy battery and clean connections.

Another good way to test for bad connections is to try to start the engine, then feel for hot contacts. This is great for finding them, but can cause some very painful burns.

I took the to the dealer, and had them load texted they checked fine, but an auto mechanic said that did not always work, sometimes they would show to be good, and still not have enough amps. So I boosted it with my other motorcycle, and it started right up, So I had the dealer to put me A new one on charge, pick it up in the morning, hope this is all it is. Thanks for the help.

Thanks everyone for all the replies, as all of you can tell by my questions that I am A long way from being A mechanic. Well new battery did not fix the problem, Took it to the shop yesterday, hope to find out something by Monday (12 30 13). When they know for sure what it is they will check if it is covered under warranty, if it is the starter, and not covered probably going to get it rebuilt, my dealer knows someone that can do it A lot cheaper than new.
