Default Oil change interval, 2500 or 5000

Hi, my motor oil was changed about 2500 mile ago. The service department where I bought my bike, and with the maintenance package, says that Victory recently changed their motor oil interval schedule from 2500 to 5000 miles. So going by this I have another 2500 miles before my next oil change.

Now the issue.. I checked my oil today which looked dark, so I drained about a half cup oil to check it closer. The oil is nearly black. So I am questioning now how valid the 5000 interval is that I was told.

So is 5000 miles really the current interval, or am I being told wrong. I have 2008 Hammer with 100’ motor. I'd hate to think the service department didn't change my oil last time due to the interval change, probably not the case, but just being cautious.

2010 and older 2500

2011 and newer 5000

They upgraded their transmission in 2011 which is why they extended the interval. As for being black, that is what oil is suppose to do. It cleans as well as lubricates. Some have sent their oil in for lab analysis and found that 5000 mile changes are fine. Here are two of the threads. There are more just search for oil analysis.

Thanks for that post. Interesting on the Rotella Blend. Think I may just change out my oil with the Rotella for the next 2500 miles to be on the safe side until I discuss this more closely with the service department with the 5k miles on a 2008 bike.

Sometimes I don't read the entire post. I looked for which bike you ride in your signature and didn't see it there so just went off what I've seen and heard in general. That and I have a 2010 XR so I immediatly went with the devil I know.

However, after reading the rest of your post and seeing you have a 2008 Hammer, I went to Victory's website and checked out the 2008 Hammer owner's manual http://cdn.polarisindustries.com/pol...9921245r01.pdf

Page 77 recommends oil and filter changes every 5000 miles though there is a 2500 mile service as well. Everything on the 2500 mile service is inspect. So your shop is following Victory's recommendation. My apologies for any confusion

I did look at the 2009 Hammer and it recommends 2500 miles oil change. Again on page 77

At first I thought the difference is between the 100 and 106 engine.

But then for S&G I started looking at other model year Hammers

2005 Hammer 100 ci 2500 http://cdn.polarisindustries.com/pol...9919443r02.pdf
2006 Hammer 100 ci 2500 http://cdn.polarisindustries.com/pol...9920121r01.pdf
2007 Hammer 100 ci 2500 http://cdn.polarisindustries.com/pol...9920828r02.pdf
2008 Hammer 100 ci 5000 http://cdn.polarisindustries.com/pol...9921245r01.pdf
2009 Hammer 106 ci 2500 http://cdn.polarisindustries.com/pol...9921959r02.pdf
2010 Hammer 106 ci 2500 http://cdn.polarisindustries.com/pol...9922435r01.pdf
2011 Hammer 106 ci 5000 http://cdn.polarisindustries.com/pol...9922435r01.pdf
2012 Hammer 106 ci 5000 http://cdn.polarisindustries.com/pol...r02_lo_res.pdf
2013 Hammer 106 ci 5000 http://cdn.polarisindustries.com/pol...r01_lo_res.pdf

So I don't know a reason why the 2008 Hammer is recommended at 5000 mile oil change and the rest before 2011 is recommended at 5000 but that is what the owners manual states.

Sounds like in 08 they started the "test" to see if it could reasonably be extended to 5k. Then by 2011 they had enough data to change the service schedule going forward.

The above is pure speculation... Nothing more, nothing less. Sounds damn good though
