Default Crazy Intake Idea

Okay, so I was sitting around thinking about the "Am I Crazy" thread in the general discussion area dreaming about how much I wanted to buy another Kawasaki ZRX in the near future. Then I started thinking about all the mods we had done to them. That is where my inspiration comes from for this off the wall idea that I am about to pitch.

I am not at home, nor will I be for another month an a half, so I have no way of measuring to make sure this would even fit.

When we (ZRX owners) began doing mods to our bikes we of course went with the first thing every motorcyclist does --- Intake and exhaust! I, and many other owners, ripped out our stock air box because it was so restrictive and installed "pod" filters into the intake side of the carbs. Granted there were four separate carbs so there was way more air flow coming in than the old air box could even dream of, even with vents.

My idea was to measure the intake for the Cross bikes and find a pod filter that would fit onto them. Remember, I am not at home and have not done ant measuring this is still a really rough idea. With a separate individual pod filter secured to each of the intakes and the panel removed there should be more filter area than the panel could supply.

If anyone back in the US with access to their bike feels like being adventurous and measuring and fitting pods that would save me some time when I get back, or just shoot this idea down. The should be a very quick modification if anyone decided to do it. Even better is someone tried it and found filters that fit and got it dyno'd somewhere to see how it stacks up to just the high flow panel filter.

BTW on a ZRX 1200 this modification plus a full exhaust and rejected carbs bumped most from 112 hp to 130ish, TQ stayed close to the same.

I have attached pics just in case i did not explain very well.

Feel free to tell me why and how this idea would not work for a cross bike.

I am not sure this would gain you anything. The cross uses a flat filter that fits into the top of the frame at an angle. Installing a pod filter would be difficult at best and with the size that would fit down into the frame the filter area would not be much improved if at all. I read that the high flow filter will work fine up to I think it was 140hp. That number might be off.

Pull the rubber strip off if your looking for some cheap HP.

I agree that the install at ion would be a pain in the @$$. However, the intake is the issue with all cross bikes. That filter i useless, sure it lets air pass through it and I guess you could say it is good until 140 hp but then we would see 116 in cross bikes making in the 130 for hp not 115 hp and 125 tq. The issue is the lack of filtration material which is why lloyds filter doesn't do much except give 30% more filter area. Granted he is going to have another attachment for his system but the filter size still stands as the point.

My whole concept with the pods is that the size of the actual filter element would be greatly increased.

I hope that makes sense. It's just after 4 am here and my brain has gone foggy.

Anything is possible and pods are also the most popular mod for the V-Star folks. If you want some more ideas see if you can find pictures and or info about "IronX". This is a XC build that a member of Viper Mike Charley did that involved a turbo.

I saw IronX and it looked good. I jet wish there was a kit for that turbo and it wasn't a custom fabricated turbo system.

I am not saying the concept of adding more area is not sound. I am saying the design of the frame and how the throttle body connects is going to limit the addition of a larger filter. Yes adding a external will increase the filter size but will add plumbing that will restrict flow. Adding the turbo is a solution to that problem if you want to go that direction.

Lloydz is working on a dome air filter for your bike. There was a drawing some place maybe do a search here.
Its fun thinking out side the box.
