Many have posted in threads about their experiences with lowering their bike...so here's mine. I had my bike lowered by 1" using HMD's (Heavy Metal Design) SLAM KIT, that includes the lowering link, kickstand and skidplate. As of today, I have not installed the skidplate (yet).
A little about me and the bike:
I'm 5'7" and weigh 225lbs.
I have a 30" inseam
I'm not an aggressive rider at all...so lean angles and dragging pipes didn't concern me a whole lot.
Bike IS lower
Easier to "swing" leg over the bike
Kickstand gives a MUCH better lean angle to the bike
It looks good!
I "feel" lower in the bike
Both feet on the ground at ALL times (even on banked roads)
BACKUP power!!! Able to move bike with my HEELS as opposed to my toes.
Handling (yes, I may be the ONLY person to say its different...more on that later)
Dragging pipes (OK, I'm not that kind of rider, but my mechanic took it for a spin and he said he did scrape one time)
So that's what I have right now...
...let me explain. 99% of the people that had their bike lowered said handling was not effected, but at least in my case...I can tell a difference. It's ONLY a small difference, but for me enough to notice. The slow manuevering is slightly effected by the turn radius being a little "stiffer".
- The kickstand I got was the shortened kickstand from HMD, and I decided on the CHROME version. NICE. EXCELLENT CHROMING!!! One NOTE on the kickstand though...regardless of whether you get the CHROME one or the standard kickstand...either keep or order the RUBBER. While I have heard people say that you don't need the rubber pad (they say it was so the bikes wouldn't scuff up dealers floors)...this pad does serve an additional purpose. It keeps the kickstand from SLAMMING up against the PRIMARY cover...and it does SLAM against the primary cover HARD. I had to re-drill the holes in my CHROME kickstand and replace the rubber and now all is GOOD!!!
- this is 1/8" powdercoated steel and is HEAVY..made extremely well!!! I bet this thing weighs 10-15 lbs. I have elected (at least for now) not to install. Although I will probably go ahead and install next week.
Again...these are INITIAL observations...I could tell after today's ride that I am already adjusted to the handling thing....and really everything else is GRAVY.
I'm a happy camper!!
