Default Need help with rocker box removal

2014 XC engine is in and the front cover came off easy but the back will not so far. All the bolts came out easy. I have pushed the bike in gear to change the lifter position but no luck so far. There is a small black and orange sensor and short plugged hose center front of the cover that I have not disconnected. Does not look like it would help anyway but maybe that is the key. What am I missing? Thank you.

The secret is lifting the backbone and holding it in place out of the way with a large screwdriver or something equivalent. See if the picture below makes sense. You can see I used a crowbar to bend the backbone and then slipped the screwdriver in some matching holes to keep it there.



If you are changing cams you will need to lift out the pin as shown below using a magnet. In this case I put a magnet against an allen wrench (to magnetize it) then put the allen down in the hole to lift out the pin. The green screwdriver is there to hold up the cam chain so it doesn't fall in where it would be a pain to get back out.

I am just doing the cover gaskets. you do not appear to be on a lift. Also did you not loosen any of the bolts at the front of the front backbone so it would rotate a bit when lifting on the back. My issue at this point is lifting the back end of the front backbone where you did it with a crowbar. Thanks

It has been a few years since I did this. There is definitely a bolt or two at the back end of the backbone that would need to be removed before being able pry up the backbone. I wish I had take more pics at the time.

I used Bbobs photos and help when doing my cams. He's spot on. Even though you're not doing cams, everything he's mentioning here will be very helpful for you to complete your task. When I removed the bolts at the back of the back bone (near the seat), I didn't remove but I did loosen the bolt at the front near the forks. Also, you're not removing every bolt there, just the two that will allow you to separate the back bone from the bracket, you'll see which two when you look. The back bone doesn't need to come up much and it'll be difficult to raise the backbone up. A long pry bar as shown in his picture is best since it provides more leverage. Prying with just a longer screwdriver won't cut it. It's stiff! I pried at the the brackets where I removed the rear bolts of the back bone. Once I got it up high enough, I stuck a long screw driver through the top hole so the back bone couldn't come down below that. That provided enough clearance to not only remove the cover but raise the cam carrier up and pull cams out.

I'm curious. Why are changing the cover gaskets? Were they leaking? Isn't your bike still under the first year warranty where the dealer would do all this for you? Maybe you just want to do it yourself to be sure they are done right. Yes?

Not sure yet how to position the pry bar and what to leverage on.

Good question and yes I want to do it right and learn a lot in the process. Had metric before as you can see so Vic is a new venture.I am swapping chrome from a Boulevard for my black.

No, I had it held up with my motorcycle lift. When raising the back bone up, it's easier to have the front wheel a few inches off the ground.
