Default XR ticking noise

I have a 2011 XR with an annoying ticking sound, like a valve or lifter knock. It makes my ride sound like a Singer sewing machine. Any thoughts/suggetions appreciated. I had a mech look at it (not a Vic mech, however) and he said nothing to worry about.

Is the ticking at start up or at 30 mph or at 70 mph
you have to tell us more if you want help.
How old is your oil or is the oil level low.

I would suggest staying away from fabric stores. Your XR maybe horny and feel the need to breed...

Seriously though, mine made a loud ticking sound the first time I started it after its winter nap. I think its still there a little, but much quieter now. Do you ride often?

Default XR ticking

The ticking has always been there since I bought it last September. When I told the salesman at the dealer, he suggested it may just need to break in. The oil level is fine, and I changed it yesterday. I also changed it at 300 miles and at 1200. It now has 2700 on it. The noise manifests itself at cold start and once the oil circulates, it subsides briefly, and when hot at highway speeds it varies with the RPMs. I'm of the opinion it may be a partially blocked oil port, lifter malfunction, or valve adjustment. I'm currently running Amsoil 20w50. I was using their 10w40 before I changed it.

An aftermarket set of mufflers will make the ticking (sewing) sound go away.

Please add your bike's year and model to your signature. Here's why.

Blest with victory and peace, may the heav'n rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation.
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: "In God is our trust."
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

You're straddling a large V-Twin and if you aren't used to riding fairing or windshield equipt bikes you will hear a lot of engine noise. The diagnosis is simple:

-If it ticks all the time you're hearing lifters and possibly injectors. This isn't a problem, even cars do it but you wouldn't notice unless you take a ride on top of the engine.

-If it ticks quietly at start up and goes away when slightly warmed up it's an indication of lifter noise that would warrant an adjustment.

-If it clicks loudly at start up and shakes the bike but goes away when slightly warmed up you could be hearing rod bearings which is bad juju.

-If it ticks quietly at start up and doesn't stop until it's warmed all the way up it's probably exhaust gaskets which could be fixed by tightening the bolts on the head pipe flanges.

Mine has done the first example for over 13000 miles and it hasn't chanced from day one.

Mine ticked and made all kind of noise from day one. Couldn,t stand it anymore so i traded it! Vic bikes look nice but their motors need some changes. Way to much engine noise.

My ticking noise was key ring banging on cheese wedge. Drove me nuts till I figured it out.

cruiser, my noise was the same, cheese wedge. Got rid of the ring and used a tie wrap instead, problem solved. Think the Vic is noisey--try a Kawasaki, now they were loud, never a issue, just the way the motors sounded.
