Default Ipod controls dont work

I was looking forward to having music controlable by the switches. So I researched out whic Ipods worked. I found a used 4th gen NANO and ordered it up. So I got music loaded on it today in about 5 playlists. I hooked up to bike, put it in "AUX" It does not show "Ipod" I can get the Ipod to play, but none of the functions work. Volume works but thats it. So do I have a bad cable? Or possibly a bum Ipod? I know the battery is bad as the unit will not work unless it is plugged in. So any ideas?

Silly question but just to get it out of the way are you connecting the iPod either using a 30 pin (old apple connector) or a lightening connector (new style)? If you are trying to use the headphone jack that won't work.

If you are using one of those try using a q-tip with some rubbing alcohol and cleaning the connector. The battery issue makes me wonder if there isn't an issue with gunk on the contacts.

Another thing to try is borrow a device from somebody else and see if that works. If it doesn't you may have a cable issue. Check the connectors at the saddlebags closely (add some dielectric grease while you're at it).

XCT so 30 pin plug in left front leg fairing. I cleaned the plugs on both the Ipod and bike side connector with some CRC contact cleaner today. Still nothing. One of my students says he thinks he has an ipod somewhere and if he finds it he will bring it to class and I can try it. I have heard of the plugs on the Ipods going "bad" before.

My Ipod kept disconnecting when I turned off my bike , I;E; getting fuel and such , I would have to unplug it , and plug it back in then fine until I shut the bike off again , this pissed me off beyond belief . I went with a very early Ipod , generation 3 I think , NOT ONE PROBLEM SINCE . The Vic system is more stone age then media age I'm thinking ....

I read some posts, mostly on the Vision but it still helped me figure out I did not want a 1st gen Ipod and nothing after I think 6 as they are fire wire or something. So I went with a Gen 4 Ipod. So I am hoping a friend will have an ipod I can use to troubleshoot this thing a little. See if swapping to a different Ipod will clear it up.

You can get the later gen ipods or iphones with the new lightning connector you just need this adapter. It works perfect Lightning to 30-pin Adapter (0.2 m) - Apple

Or if you can use other means of charging (cheap cable and usb plug since i think the XCT has a 12v in the lower) I just got this and it seems to work for bluetooth and still have handlebar control of track and playlist.

BenD and chopperrod like this.

Also have you tried it both the with the ipod connected before turning the ignition on and after?

I have seen issues where if you plug in after the bike is on for some reason it doesn't recognize the ipod correctly.
