Question Question on front rake for XC...

I'm starting to look into doing a larger front wheel and rake to my 2010 XC. I've never had a bike (or ridden one) that had a rake to it...so can those of you who have done this upgrade (or ridden a XC with the upgrade) provide some info so I can either talk myself into spending the big bucks or talk myself into not spending the money...on the front upgrade...?

I'd like to know how the different degrees of rake and size wheel impacts handling (I'm thinking of a 6 degree rake with a 23" wheel). My desire is to get the looks of the rake and bigger wheel without the loss of the current handling.

I'd like to hear if anyone has done the upgrade to a 21" wheel with no rake...and to see pics...did you have any change to handling?

At what degree of rake will the front wheel start to feel really heavy? I ask this becasue I have ridden a springer and my inital thought was the front end felt heavy and sloppy...but I did get used to it after a few miles. Just wondering if the rake to our bikes will make it feel that way too.

Finally, what I've been able to read on these upgrades is that the front fenders appear to be a pretty big consideration. Is this just cosmetic or can going with a fiberglass fender (or any other lighter material) hurt or help with the handling when raking and adding a bigger wheel?

Thumbs up Cool site…

Makes the upgrade process look pretty easy. Just bolt on the new upper frame and the rest of the parts and you're running a 26" front wheel.

I've seen the other sites (Arlen Ness, Kewl Metal) and their upgrade kits look pretty slick too. But my questions aren't about the actual upgrade but how folks who are running the big front wheel like, or dislike, the handling.

Have you done this upgrade to your ride?

Well, if he's a a XC rider and has done all the hard work for us I'll definitely look at going that route should I go that big. Do you know if he's done a 23" wheel too? And maybe he could post up his impressions of the ride with the conversion.

I will post some pictures. I have rode the bike and it rides great. If you just want the 23" wheel he offers 6 degree triple trees to do thAt and customs made wheels. 3 days after we had it put together be put 5,000 miles in 2 weeks on it. Nice pics...and a great look. Sounds like you guys had a great ride too!

Having said all that, did he find the riding and steering with the large wheel the same after having the rake engineered or were there any riding charactistics that those of us that are thinking of doing this should be aware of?

I suggest you give Tim and Rusty at Coastal Victory/Hotvic.com a call (843)651-9799. They have been putting 21's, 23's, and 26's on the front of XC's for a couple years now.
I have ridden each & every bigger wheel & rake combo they sell & install. one thing you need to consider with the 23 & up wheel is adding bump stops in your forks. they prevent you from slamming your fender into your fairing if you hit a pot hole or need to do some emergency braking.
If you do a lot of riding on curvy roads, a 21 or 23 with a rake kit will still handle great and ride smooth. Personally, I ride a Vision with 8 degree rake and a 21" wheel, she rides smooth and handles great in the curves. I wish I could move up to a 23", but to do that I'll need to modify my headlight, and I'm still too chicken to cut up such an important part of my bike.

I haven't done this but have had raked out bikes in the past. Generally they ride great on the straight line super slabs and just fine on gently curving winding roads. Where they have a negative effect is slow speed and tight corners. You also have to allow for extra room to do a turn around.

I would like to do this but would not go over 23 inches and would probably go with a 21" with a 120 width tire so it still looks meaty and has decent longevity.

The Vic Bagger set up is pretty slick for sure!

Thanks! Really appreciate the insight on the handling and the need for fork stops. I'll definitely give them a call and ask a few more questions...just wish these guys and the other shops were located in Texas. Of course that may mean I just need to plan a ride to them...this mod project gets a little more fun with each new piece of info I get!
