Default cruise control not working and an iPod issue.

Now that I'm done dealing with the two major annoyances of the XC, heat & buffeting. I have two minor annoyances I want too take care of....1. My iPod sounds like its underwater. 2. The cruise control turns on but won't set.
Last Saturday I pulled the tank and fairing, I traced the iPod line but could not find any shorts or bad connections, I also cleaned all the connectors....Still sounding like its underwater and the volume is low.
While the tank was off I readjusted the throttle cables but the CC is still not setting. It turns on and off(red light on the switch) but that's it, no action from any of the other buttons.

Any ideas?

So I take it that the green cruise light on the dash is not coming on?
If it's not on then it could be one or more of the 3 switches to cancel cruise:
- Front brake light switch.
- Rear brake light switch.
- Throttle Pull cable switch.

I would disconnect all three, and go for a ride to see if your cruise works.
Be aware that you won't have any brake lights during this time so pick a quiet area and time of day to test this.
If your cruise now works, then you know it is one of those switches.
Plug in one at a time until you discover which one is the problem.

I doubt it would be a fuse as you are getting a red indicator on the controls.

Pain,
I agree with Paul about testing the three switches. I would like to recommend the cruise control test procedure in the maintenance manual though. It requires no riding, so it is safer and will give you visual indication via the cruise control light on the dash that the switches are good. I troublehot my cruise issue when bike was new with this and was able to determine the under tank throttle cable switch was culprit. Page 19.23 is where the diagnostics info is located!

Default Cruise Control

My cruise control was giving me the same issue and it was the cable under the tank making the switch. I believe the switch should be normally open and if it closes (Slack in the cable, like rolling the throttle forward) the cruise will not set.

I've read a few threads that mostly all found the throttle cable switch under the tank on the front right was the culprit. Many have disconnected that switch to get their CC working again. By disconnecting it, the CC will not turn off by rolling the throttle off. Apparently the switch is also fairly inexpensive so replacing it after removing it from the circuit is also quick and easy.

To disconnect the throttle cable off switch, simply remove the wires from it and tape them apart so they don't make contact with each other.

My CC has started to not engage sporadically. When the CC doesn't engage on my CCT, the green CC light flashes quickly when I turn the system on. The red light glows as it should on the On/OFF switch. But the CC simply won't engage. Once it doesn't engage, it won't until the bike is cycled on and off at the next stop.

Thank you all for the advice, I'm going to look at the diag procedure in the manual(which I didn't know was there).
From what's described and that the cc stopped working when I changed my bars, I'm leaning toward throttle switch being the culprit but I'll give them all a check.

In case anyone else is interested this is the cruise control diag procedure from the 2013 XR/XC Service Manual:

Cruise Control Diagnostics
The sensors and switches that supply information to the
cruise control module can be tested to verify proper
operation using the self-diagnostic function built in to the
cruise control system.
NOTE: The ENGINE STOP SWITCH must be in the RUN
position during the entire procedure. The LED indicator
light on the ON/OFF switch must be illuminated when the
key, stop switch, and cruise are ON. (Check power supply
on Pin 1 (DG/PK wire) at the cruise switch connector in the
fairing if the LED is not lit.
To enter the diagnostic mode:
1. Turn the cruise control OFF.
2. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
3. Turn the ignition key ON, but do not start the engine.
4. Press and HOLD the RESUME / ACC button while you
press the cruise control ON/OFF button. The cruise
control indicator should illuminate on the instrument
cluster.
5. Release both buttons. The cruise control indicator
should go OFF. If it does NOT go off when the buttons
are released, refer to the Troubleshooting Chart at the
end of this procedure.
The system is now in self-diagnostic mode.
Switch Button Test
6. Press and release the SET/DEC button. The cruise
indicator lamp should illuminate every time the button
is pushed and go out when released.
7. Press and release the RES/ACC button. The cruise
indicator lamp should illuminate every time a button is
pushed and go out when released.
Brake Light Switch Test
8. Pull the front brake lever or push the rear brake pedal.
The cruise indicator lamp should illuminate every time
a brake is applied and go out when released.
Throttle Safety Switch Test
9. Close the throttle firmly with the twist grip. The cruise
indicator lamp should illuminate every time the throttle
is closed and go out when the throttle grip is released.
Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) Test
10. Roll the motorcycle forward or backward for at least 2
meters while observing the cruise indicator lamp. If the
speed signal is present, the cruise indicator lamp
should flash and continue to flash at the same rate.
Tachometer Signal Test
11. Turn the cruise control OFF (press the OFF button).
12. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
13. Be sure the transmission is in NEUTRAL.
14. Turn the ignition key to the ON position and start the
engine. Hold the RES/ACC button down while you
press the cruise control ON button.
15. Release both buttons. If a tachometer signal is present,
the cruise indicator lamp should flash at a rate based
on engine RPM. Rev the engine. The rate of flash
should increase with RPM.
16. Turn the ignition key to the OFF position. All tests are
complete.

Regarding your iPod; I was doing a little thinking and am wondering if there is anything else you can plug your iPod into (another 30-pin dock or connector?) to see if the problem follows the iPod. I have such a dock at home if you wanted to give it a shot. Conversely, do you happen to have another 30-pin device? I have an old iPhone 4 if you wanted to test it. I should have thought of it when you stopped over last Sunday...

I do computer/device troubleshooting for a living. The idea is to either confirm or rule out every possible layer in the onion. If his iPod works on a different base, then that's not the problem. If another device works on the bike, it's not the bike. I'm thinking perhaps something with the pins or connections, but I'd want to try A -> B and B -> A to see what the problem follows...
