Richie...Funny you should ask! I just received the same set and will be installing the tapered rollers top and bottom in conjunction with changing the fork oil. Since the forks and all will have been removed, I thought this an opportune time to upgrade the steering head bearings.
I do not know how to edit a video once I have taken it so I will do a series of stills illustrating the process. I intend to start the job sometime after Christmas, maybe after New Years too. But sometime soon.
Richie, if you know which end of the screwdriver is the handle, you can do the job yourself and save hundreds of dollars. I assume by your location you are not doing much riding and I am retired, so once I've done it, I can assist you via 'puter or phone. BTW, how many miles are on your XR and why do you think the brgs need replacing?
Good morning RICZ,
I would be ever so grateful for any help you can give me.
One fork was rebuilt last winter and the other is brand new this last summer. (I was run down in a hit and run accident and it took out both forks, front fender, along with a long lest of other damage.)
This last summer I tightened the steering bearing adjusting nut and that cured the (clunk), that I had whenever I hit a bump, for a short time and then the clunk returned. I am thinking that the steering bearings may also have been damaged in the accident and I want to replace them.
The bike has 32,705 miles on it.
After reading the service manual, I was a bit overwhelmed by all the work required to do the job.
I have been doing all the service and repairs on the bike myself and like you, I am retired so I do think with your guidance, I can do this job. I will be working in the car port so I will have to wait till early spring when the temps. warm up a bit. The carport is closed on three sides and I cover the entrance with a tarp and run some heaters to keep me from freezing. And yes, between my recent spinal surgery and the Long Island winter weather, I am not doing any riding.
It's perfect the we have the identical bikes. (I hope you are as happy with yours as I am with mine). I will be very curious to see if you are able to use the roller or ball bearings on the top. All Balls could not give me a positive answer.
I planed to replace the brake fluid this spring so that will be taken care of during this project.
RICZ, you have made my day.
Thank you very much.
