Into year four of ownership, almost 43K miles and at least a few posts about it, performance cams are finally going to be a reality. thumb up
I've got to pull in @broggyr @LILMAGS500 and @roboots21 to this. Mags, Broggy and I have been going back and forth on cams for a long time....whether or not adding cams was worth the cost or if extra performance was even a safe thing to do(especially for me...). We always thought it was going to be a "drop off at Lloydz" job, which for us would be cams, install and tune at ~$1300. Enter roboots, who was nice enough to offer help and tools for a self installation, even maps for the tune. Also, he gave me much of his time answering questions and helping me decide what to get. This brought the cost to a point I could afford now. I was still iffy about the installation and holding back. Then I came across the vid. below, once I saw for myself what the job actually entails I knew it was something I could handle. I passed the vid on to broggy, who must have thought the same thing, because next thing I know he's like a wild man over cams(I'm a bad influence ;) ) and ended up purchasing a set of S&S Stage2 cams he got a killer deal on(we won't talk anymore about this.... ). Hell, now my hand was kind of forced, after much research I found the right deal on Lloydz HOH-VM1-DR cams.
Broggy and I are having a cam party in his garage as soon as we have our parts and can work the time out. Mags is waiting in the wings to see how this goes.

Huge thanks to Jim Langton for making this vid

I haven't gotten a confirmation on my cams order, but I haven't gotten a denial either. Order was placed on July 3, so maybe a week from then hopefully.

You could ever-so-meekly and gently ask on the status of your order.

Ha!....like you two already don't know what we are going to have to say.... :wink
I don't know why but our 100/106's respond to performance better than any other big V-twin....I mean crap, all I've basically done is add a hi-flow air filter and a factory "stage 1" exhaust(the ATS and 1/4 turn ring do nothing for the numbers, just the feel). Letting a non-Victory specialist dyno tune the bike, he got me 92hp / 112tq and the bike goes damn good. With the cams, a Lloydz map and eventually a Lloydz dyno tune this thing will be at a whole new level of performance.

I'm well ......

I'll be sending those maps soon .. and when this came party is scheduled .. let me know! I shall make the trek!!

You're making me nervous Peter..... :| Now I remember when I got the XC in May of 2014, I told my wife; Victorys aren't like Harleys ...I won't need to "do anything to this bike" ....I lasted a couple of months, before I drilled the pipes, added the Vic stage 1 AF and Cobra Fi2000...... Then over the first winter bought the Lloydz ATS, throttle ring, Miller muffles and a PC-V.... Then had two seasons of dealing with "heat & buffeting" issues which basically had me end up selling and re-buying all that stuff....Finally no more heat & buffeting issues and within weeks ..holy ****!! I bought cams. Need I mention the LEDs, seats, handlebars and do-dads I've put into this bike.

Yep Peter, normally I'd say bullshit, "this bike is done"...but looking back at my own track record.....I'm very, very nervous now. :eek

It would be better with RED flames to accentuate the cams :laugh

I couldn't help but think, just put it in gear and turn the rear wheel. That's about the easiest way to turn the motor over. No welding, or destruction of OE timing wheel required.:wink

Cams are on my to do list. Just not sure if it will happen before or during winter. Biggest question is, which ones to choose? :grin

I have the Lloyds DR cams in my CCT. No complaints what so ever, I'm about 113/113. But I thought I read where people had great (perhaps better) results from the Lloyds LSC cams.

#16 ·
From what I read, the S&S may be closely related to the LSC. For the price I paid, I'm not going to argue much.
After spending lots of time picking roboots21's brain, reading up and looking at dyno charts I decided to go with the VM1-DR over the LSC or S&S cams. All give a pretty good power increase across the rpm range, but what I really want out of my cams is more passing punch. The DR's peak power toward the higher rpms over the other cams, this will get me the power feel I want.
I probably won't have a dyno tuning done(definitely, by Lloydz this time) until next year, so I won't know my #'s until then.....I'll have to go by the "butt dyno"

As far as turning the engine over goes....All I plan on doing is putting a socket on the timing gear nut....That sucker is tight in there and was easily able to crank the engine with the spark plugs in. Safely wedging that gear to stop the engine from tuning was the major pain in the ass I had to deal with when installing the Lloydz ATS.
I don't see any reason why I need special tools or would have to go to any extraordinary means.

That's what I did .. socket to turn it over .. Allen key stuck in the timing hole that aligns at tdc to stop it from turning .. easy peasy!

Don't worry. There are turbo chargers and superchargers. What else can you do?

I want a hairdryer on the left side that lets me keep my touring lowers... I may take one of these little eco-boost turbos from work and see what i can't fab up.

So, at the risk of jinxing myself, this weekend is going to consist of Saturday and Camday. UPS tracking sez my order will get here tomorrow...

MINI CAM PARTY IN MY GARAGE! B.Y.O.C. (bring your own cams)

#33 ·
Since it's bring your own cams .. does it count if they're already installed? Lol

I let Mike know that I may be able to scoot away for a bit on the bike to assist for a bit if need be so I'll be letting him know. Otherwise he has my number and I'm a phone call away if you have any issues!

I'd be curious to see the VM1-DR side-by-side with the S&S Stage II cams. Not that it'll tell us much, but it would be fun to see anyway.

So while I'm thinking of these things while reminiscing about my cam install .. I figure I'll share just in case I can't make the trek.

1) Splitting the backbone was a little scary for me, but it was super simple. I used a large pry bar to get the backbone up far enough to slide the screwdriver through, and it never moved until I needed to put it back together.
2) The allen head bolts on the valve cover can be a pain in the ass. Make sure you have a short arm allen key that will fit between the frame/valve cover. It takes some time to get all of them off and maybe each of you working from each side will expedite that.
3) When you are breaking loose the cam carrier bolts, they WILL make some cringe worthy noises, almost like the bolts are breaking. Don't fret, you'll be fine, trust me. Just the nature of the beast.
4) I used a spare allen key in the timing TDC alignment hole near the timing gear. Also works well from keeping the engine from spinning when tightening things up.
5) Before I unbolted the cam sprockets, I zip tied them to the chain so that I didn't jump time. It made it much easier in the long run and I didn't have to worry about losing the timing (albeit I still checked the timing after buttoning everything up). I left the long end of the zip tie pointing up and you can literally drop the cam sprockets down and they won't fall into the engine.
6) The cam carrier bolt torquing sequence is weird (oiled threads, torque, loosen, torque, etc), but it works as prescribed.
7) When reinstalling the cam chain tensioners, pay close attention to the silver crush washer on them. I had mine drop down off the tensioner while tightening it and it bent to all hell. Luckily, I was able to straighten it. I bought a few extras just in case, but I still have yet to replace it, as it hasn't leaked a drop of oil.
8) You WILL have some oil seepage out the bottom of the cylinder heads, being that the head studs go all the way down through to the engine case. Once reassembled, I tried to wipe up as much as I could (albeit a small amount). It'll burn off pretty quick once you ride it.
9) If memory serves me, Lloyd says that break in is to ride the freaking bike. So, once installed and buttoned up, warm it up, and go feel the new found power. Don't be bashful and open that sumbitch right up. I sure as hell did. You'll be grinning ear to ear .. you too Broggy .. those S&S cams are going to be night and day compared to stock.

That's really all I can think of right now as some quick gotcha points. Anything else comes to mind, I'll be sure to add to the list. Oh, make sure you've got a cold one handy .. you'll want one once you're done as a little celebratory thank you to yourselves. Make sure you pat each other on the back too as you'll feel proud and accomplished once you complete these .. I know I did! Happy camming, and hopefully I'll see you guys Sunday!!

Cam on brothers!

@roboots21 ....Your suggestions are pretty much dead on with Jims video...so I know you're not lying ...LOL
Hope you can make it Camday, also thumb up

When you are actually installing these cams could you take a close up view of the 3 cams, stock, lloydz and S&S side by side and post it.
If you have time that is.

Its all happening in Broggy's garage and he wants to get this pic also...so consider it done. I'll probably try to pose the cams in compromising positions for a few naughty shots, but no promises... ;)
