Question Questions on Mustang seats... Yes again sorry.

Hey guys I know this has been brought up many times and all butts are different but I have some questions and am in need of some help...

My wife and I put around 550 miles on this past weekend and both were uncomfortable after around an hour of riding. Sat was a shorter run up to the cabin around 90 miles away and back, then Sun was around 375 miles for the day. For me it was more than just my butt, after around the 100 mile mark my legs were killing me. It felt like restless leg syndrome, couldn't let them sit still and they were all sore and tingly. Pretty sure it's form being to close to my high way pegs or it was the pressure points on my leg bones. Now I'm 5' 9" and weigh 190 lbs with a bony butt, so I'm not the biggest guy but with my back rest in it pushes me forward too much and I really don't like it. With the rest out the seat position is really good for me, but then on longer runs my back start hurts too much from slouching.

I'm really leaning towards the Mustang wide vintage touring but there's really not a lot of information on them for our bikes (I've only found 1 good review on them). I think they look really good and the price is better than the Corbins. For around $700 I can find one with a backrest. Also I like the fact that I can get it with a receiver for a passenger backrest. I have the Vic lock and ride pass backrest but Mama wishes it would be taller, so this may be the perfect solution. I haven't called Mustang to see if they work with the factory backrest but I'm hoping if they don't I can just buy the mount for $35 and use my factory pad. Plus they offer an offset mount that looks like it's right up my ally, I really like being stretched out.

With that said any one running a Mustang seat? Hows the position on the bike for both rider and passenger compared to the stock seat both with and without the back rests? I'm okay if it's a bit taller but not closer for my legs, by a bit I'm thinking like 1/4-3/8" max. Like I stated earlier I like the stock seat height. Also how firm is it? I'm okay with firmer than stock but not a rock. I have a very bony butt with not much meat for cushion, so I don't like the sitting on a bench feeling. Oh and hows it do with heat? The stock seat get wicked hot after awhile and it's annoying. Not sure if it's form a pressure point on my tailbone or if it's just getting that hot from the motor.

Well I hope I didn't loose ya with my rambling I'm just looking for the "best fit" for me with out spending a small fortune. Thanks and all insight is welcomed and appreciated!

You might need some pullback bars to get you from slouching so much.

Then your rear is more into the seat. You can try playing with the backrest then too. I found without mine I'm in a better riding position so I'm trying to work out how to adjust it better.

For the heat my sheepskin helps me.

Things I learned through process of looking for a seat for my Magnum and ultimately getting it modded.

- don't have your upper and lower legs at 90 degrees ever. It puts a lot of pressure on the glutes. Put your legs, back, stretch them out. Anything to break 90 degrees.

-move back, forward in your seat as necessary. Changing position helps!

-for people who have serious seating issues, its not so much that you'll able to ride pain free. Its that the goal is to ride longer. Its absolutely true for me. I can ride about 1.5-2 hours vs 45 min-1 hr post seat mod. But if I go longer than 2 hrs I hit the same pain wall.

- i recently did my first really long road trip. 10 hrs. I feared whether I could make it. I read its better to take a 5 minute break every hour than a 30 minute break every 2 hrs. Absolutely true. I made 8 stops. 4 -10 minuters for gas (but no lunch stop) and 4 stops just to stretch. Maybe 2-3 minute breaks.

I've been 35 lb heavier and 30 lb lighter. No diff. My butt is my butt so I just manage it. With my gel pad even in 90 plus weather my butt never got hot. I strongly recommend getting a gel pad added to any seat. Get the orange ones. Any seat modifier worth their salt only uses those. They don't freeze, they don't get hot, but never feels cold either

I have used an Ultimate Seat on my last two bikes after using Mustangs for most of my lifetime riding....I wouldn't have anything other then it now.... and they offer 14 day money back trial....

Indy; for the bars I'm unwilling to give up my 16" apes but they to have more pull back than the stock bars, about 1 inch. I much prefer my bars around 1 inch over my shoulders and these are just about there. If I sit up straight they'er just under my shoulders which is nice for slow speed maneuvering when I move forward and up so to speak in the seat. I find that this really helps me in the 2-5 MPH parking lot type riding.

Tenax; I agree with your 90 degree comment the only problem there is I really like sitting that way.... 😒 And I have noticed when sitting that way for longer periods that's when my butt really starts to hurt. But I move around A LOT so it is what it is. And I agree that stopping more often is key but it's not always an option for me. I ride with a group of guys and gals that ride for 350-500 miles a day so we stop around that 125 mile mark most of the time. We all have baggers that are set more towards touring so with the bigger fuel tanks we can go farther. If it's just me and the wife we try and stop every hour or so 60-75 miles. Also I know that pain free will not ever happen, but I think achieving 150 miles in one shot and not be miserable like I was is a good goal to hit. Cause after around 100 miles with out spotting is just utterly awful, and the biggest complaint from us was the seat. For my wife it's the fact that the seat isn't flat and she doesn't like the concurved shape, it puts pressure on her tailbone.

Yeah I've looked into them but there too big for me, plus I don't want to be up that tall. I really like the drag specialties seat but too many people have complained about it putting them to close to the bars and I'm hoping to move back more so then forward.

Just replaced a Mustang with an Ultimate seat. I love it and my wife says that the Ultimate is like night and day can moared to the Mustang

Had a Mustang on my 900 Kawaski Vulcan. It was great and a must have. Now on the XCT I have a Drag Specialties with a driver backrest. I'm 40/60 on it or the OEM. My bike has the pullback bars on it so that helps some. The DS seat is ok for the most part and I like the backrest. But longer trips I think it is narrower in the front part and puts more stress on the wrong parts as far as weight. But for my long road trips I still run the DS seat because of the backrest. Comfort wise I like the OEM seat. It is also is a bit stiffer than OEM. SO my work around is I have a seat pad for a Kyak that I use on the DS seat to give a bit more padding and width to set to displace the pinch point.
When I bought the bike it had a backrest for the OEM seat, but I think it was maybe a grasshopper or something. It did not fold well for wife and was kind of big and took her space up. So I sold it. I think if I found/had the OEM drivers backrest I would go with that.

Well I pulled the trigger on a Mustang and I must say its not for me. Its very well made and I like the padding but the postion is not for me. Puts me in a layed back position much like a lawn chair would and I personaly dont like it. Im really bummed cause I like the seat just not the way it sets me on the bike. It sets your pelvis really close to the tank (my nuts almost sit on the tank) and now I have next to zero arm bend cause of the angle of my back. Long distance I might love this but I ride a lot in the city so unfortunately its not for me. Also it's wide up front and I feel less confident with my feet on the ground. I think if I was 6 feet plus tall this seat would be awsome but im not (5'9") so its not a good fit. Again very good seat very well made it just doesn't "fit" me or my riding style. Another side note this seat looks great on the bike. And the passenger section is very nice. I'm going to return it and try the DS low profile touring seat and see how I like that. P.S. Dennis Kirt has an awsome policy on seats 90 days if returned in like new condition. Highly recomend them, I'm a MN boy and there only about 45 min away from my house so it was an easy desition for me to use them.
