Default Belt a little loose

Belt adjustment gets alot of Q's around here about too tight and chirping so when I received the MotionPro tool and followed protocol (12CCT @ 1400 miles) and found my belt just a little loose equally all over - but tracking well and no noise. I wonder if it's best to leave alone unless there is a reason not too?

SVC Manual calls for 1.25 in deflection and mine is as best as I can tell closer to 1.4ish Better a little loose than too tight eh?

If everything seems to be running OK then you might want to leave it and check it again in another 500 to 1000 miles. Mine was off about as much as yours but I tightened mine to spec in a few minutes then spent a few hours getting the belt to run in the middle of the back sprocket!

if it gets too loose it will slip on the pulley. I had that happen on my heritage, I was getting on it a little starting out and it jumped a few teeth, kind of un-nerving.

now , 2011 crossroads and 05 sportster bobber in the making
in order of ownership, sears compact scooter, honda 305 scrambler, honda 160 dream , triumph 500 trophy trail, honda cb450, sportster, honda f750, 2nd sportster, harley flh, harley super glide, 3rd sportster, bmw k1000, harley low rider, 2nd harley super glide, harley heratage, harley road king, bmw r1150rt,
thats just the street bikes!

There's loose and there's waay loose.

Under an inch and a half is within Pops comfort level.

If it's tracking right, not throwing an inordinate pile of dust, slipping or showing other signs of degradation then it ain't broke by my standards.

Belts suck for a variety of reasons but when they aren't squeaking, coming apart in chunks or clouds of fibrous dust or emptying your wallet at the parts counter then putting up with the HP loss is almost acceptable. I still check tension weekly but I'm too skeered of tracking issues to mess with a belt until my gut tells me it's stupid sloppy.

I can't run my bike with 1.25 in of deflection. I adjusted it the other day and then went for a ride. I could here this winning sound so I stopped and checked the belt.... Singing tight.. Again..... This is the second time I adjusted the belt and when the bike is cold the belt is loose. I go for a ride and it gets very tight.

I bet when my bike is cold (room temp) the belt has better than 3 in of play. Go for a ride and almost no play.

You guys that think your belt is loose... Check it after a ride when everything is hot. I bet it's tight.......

Rob, that is why you check the deflection when it is cold. The aluminum parts on the X bikes expand when hot and in turn make the belt get tighter. If belt is at the correct deflection at cold (above 70 some degrees and bike has been sitting for 24 hours) then you will not have any problems when the bike heats up and makes the belt get tighter.

I had the same problem at service manual deflection of 1.25. Ran fine until it warmed up, then sounded like a banshee. At operating temp the belt was too tight. I loosened it up a bit, cold deflection of 1.5 and its running perfect. No noise, no whine. Before, it sounded like the tranny was coming apart.

Agreed but the point I am trying to make is that the belt is so loose when cold that I can't believe it doesn't skip over the sprocket. Then it depends how hot it is outside as to just how tight it will get.

So you guys need to do a check when Hot. I bet there is a lot of over tight belts out there. And that can do some serious bearing damage.
