A Cross Country Tour is a Cross Country with a slew of optional equipment bolted on. From a purely ""most bang for the buck" perspective, the Tour package is pretty compelling. There is the forged bars on the Base model, but I'm told they are strictly optional as of 2014. But, if the bars define the bike for you, then the argument is good for a '13 Base. Anyway Pop is pissing up a rope. A rider gets a model choice under they skin and kitchen table math means bupkus.
Will they offer better deals later this fall/winter or historically is this as good as it usually gets?
Of course. Depends on your detective skills and the limits you put on your search radius. There are better deals than the one you are considering right now somewhere. It's like pretty wimminz. There's always another, but the other guy always seems to get her. You have to just be in the right place at the right time to beat him to her. If you sit on the couch wishing you get wishes. You want results, shake some trees.
For those that drive the XC any regrets from making this choice?
No. There are manufacturing and design compromises on this bike, but find one mass produced bike that doesn't have same. Apples to apples as a heavyweight V twin bagger/ tourer it is marginally superior in some categories to all the other options, clearly superior in some key categories, and only lacking in some categories that to Pop are manageable. Everybody here will sing the machines praises, me included, so you can read this bible elsewhere for that testimony. The warts are not hidden and they are pretty well vetted in other threads as well.
So, words of wisdom? No, not outta my yap. Here's a recap though. I bought in September. Unlike BBob I am all about the deal. I get a woody knowing that to date, I am not aware of anyone paying as little as I did for a new 2012 Cross Country Tour in 2012 or since for that matter. I hunted, I lurked, I turned over rocks and I decided what I would pay. What I did pay is my business but what you are considering to pay for a new Base is more than I paid for a Tour with the 5 year and a grand in parts and gear (that was the factory deal in 2012). I started the hunt in August fixed on getting a leftover and I picked a target price that I would pay. After September 1st I got serious because once you get a month with an "brrr" on the end of it dealers get incentivized to deal. Scoured the web, the rags and picked peeps brains and by the end of September I had two deals at less than my target number, one almost a thousand miles away, the other less than 500. I would have gone the 1000 miles in a heartbeat but the 500 was a better deal.
I'm going to take one more swing at this. If I could get a Tour for Base money and I didn't have a use in the world for the top box or the hard lowers and so forth, I would go with the Tour and get a feel for what that stuff sold for on the forums, and then sell it to recoup a couple ducats and buy some geegaws I did want. Because believe you me, there is more than one guy who bought a Base and then found himself wanting the Tour package.
