Default XC Intermittent Cruise Problem?

I have a 2010 XC. Around 3000 miles I had the cruise act up. It was operating normal, then after braking/shifting, it would not "Set". When I pushed "Set" it would hold for a few seconds then drop off. Or hold on "Set" for maybe 1/4 mile then drop off again. "power" was still on. Tried numerous times and it would not "Set". After a few more miles it was operating normal. After this I installed a Custom Dynamics LED non-seqeuntial run/brake license plate frame. Now at about 5400 miles it has done it again. But after a few more miles of running, it was operating normal. Any ideas? I don't believe the license plate frame has anything do do with it because it had done this prior to that install. I know that guys on this and other forums have used this LED frame and not experienced any cruise problems. Anyone know if this would throw a code that could be read? Suggestions?
I am aware that the Back-off Brake flasher needs a diode to not interfere with the cruise. Also that the Kisan unit is not compatible with our XC and XR bikes.

to be sure - i do not know....mine is fine at 8K...lots of talk here about how sensitive it is though and as such i am leaving it be..... it must be monitoring the light current to trip off...not a great way to do this in my view as it is very noise sensitive....and so what occurred to me is the fender hole and crap in the harness...?? been wet lately?

I've had a similar problem, and based on that I will guess one of your switches needs replacement. There are three switches that cancel the cruise. One is at the front brake leveler, one at the throttle, and one at the rear brake pedal. One of these three fellas remains closed or closes when it's not supposed to. Could be temperature, moisture, and a gazillion other reasons why it's malfunctioning.

If you dig into the service manual for the Cross bikes, pages 19.22 - 19.23 will guide you through testing each switch in order to determine the bad one. You can do this if you like having fun, or you can take it to your dealer and they will find and replace the bad switch for you under the warranty.

My throttle switch was stuck in closed position from day one, so I did the troubleshooting as per service manual and found where the bad switch was, then rode to the dealer and asked them to replace it.

Mine has done it a couple of times. I just turn off the cc and back on then it works just fine.

Thanks for the replies. I know it's not due to wet. It was dry and the bike had not been wet. During this happening, I did try to "power" off and back on then wait about 3 seconds , and "set" again. Seemed as though after I waited awhile, then it returned to normal operation. Must be a 'GREMLIN'.....................

dirtdobber and rdeerx: Did you guys try the troubleshooting in the service manual? I would think it's worth finding out if you have a bad switch or not, at least for knowledge's sakes if nothing else.

It's only done it twice. Both times is when I hit the wrong thing. It is easily done when your not looking or use to where they are. Remember I have 2 other touring bikes that have cruise and the controls are in different locations so it is easy for me to hit the wrong thing.
It takes 2 seconds for the cc to get activated once it is turned on. In other words you have to turn it on wait 2 seconds before hitting set. The controls are very sensitive. You can hit the brake and release the cc and then hit resume or decelerate and it will go back to the original cruise speed.
I do not think there is anything wrong as long as I do it right it does just fine. It does have slag in it that I will figure out how to remove. I know the manual says there are no adjustments, it's there I just have to find it.
Later in the summer when all the projects are out of the way I will check it out more thoroughly and get the cc to activate without any slag/delay.
I need to get the slag out of the Goldwing to. Neither is that bad but I would like to have it like my Ultra. Hit the button and your cc grabs at the speed your are running. My Ultra had it for a while until I adjusted it out.

This just reminded me of something. When I did my +2 Bars I removed the cc controls to get it out of the way. Since then it hasn't done it.

I had a problem with my Cruise Control that I talked about on another forum and some members there helped me to find the cause. When I put the +2 bars on I pulled a plug apart so I didn't get any communication or power to the CC buttons. Found and fixed that issue and the Cruise would come on and the button would light up but nothing happened when I hit "Set".

It turns out that when I changed out the grips and hogged out the perch housing to accept HD style grips; I adjust the throttle (pull) cable a little too tight and it even had a very small amount of tension on it that didn't allow the throttle plates to close 100%. So I just loosened up that cable and it has worked fine ever since. Apparently there's a sensor there to let the system know the throttle can close all the way and it's sensitive.

That was my error and I know better but I guess I was a little tired and not paying as close attention as I should have. Oh well, live and learn. There's also an entire on-board troubleshooting computer program built into the bike.

I am not good at all when it comes to testing the electrical system. I'll check the connections on the bars though. Otherwise I guess it means a trip to the dealer. Thanx guys.........
