Default Buffeting question

Been reading about issues with wind buffeting on the bagger bikes. Seems like the Cross Country is the worst offender. I'm looking at a Crossroads, so I'm wondering if the XR suffers from the same issues? It would seem that the XR would be a bit easier to fix by swapping windscreens, but that could start to get expensive!

Buffeting is kind of subjective. Some have it some don't bother with it. Some get a lot of windscreen to stop it then find out there isn't any air back there or the screen isn't the problem.
As for the CR vs XC, the forged bars seem to be a large culprit on the XC. The XR may not have the affliction. The newer XC has round bars IIRC and that may help some. Reading all the comments is a good thing to help you know what to look for, but riding them yourself is the best medicine.

The XR has its own buffeting problems but not near as bad as the XC. I run the short Victory OEM windshield and usually get buffeting at interstate speeds from wind coming from underneath the tank but it is not too bad. I test rode 2 XC's before I bought my XR and the buffeting was terrible at 70 mph and that is why I did not buy one but I also was not on this site and if I knew it was easily fixable then a XC, not a XR, would be in my garage now.

For what it's worth, I think swapping windshields is pretty cheap, as motorcycle farkles go. If you're spending upwards of 15 grand, a few more hundred is, IMHO, a worthwhile experiment (or experiments).

Almost equally important, I think, in terms of buffeting is the area of winglets and lowers. That is, on the XCTs the adjustable plastic attached to the fairing and the adjustable doors on the lowers play a significant role, too, in this regard. So, depending on which type of bars an XC has, adding Vic or aftermarket soft or hard lowers will have an effect. And if you add winglets -- the XC doesn't come with these, right? -- that will make a difference.

I've spent some but not a huge amount of time test-riding XRs, but my guess is that since they're a more minimal type of machine, there may be less buffeting, in general. However, without a fairing or lowers, what you can do to alter airflow is more limited. Or so I think.

On my XR I run a 15" windshield from Cee Baileys and a Victory Mid-Height. I run a little north of the posted speed limit at times and do not experience what I consider as buffeting. I also run with the forged bars which, from what I have read, is 1/2 the issue you are concerned about. If I remember right, the combination of the forged bars and the CC fairing caused most of the buffeting discussions. Again, that is IMHO. I recently picked up the XR fairing so I will be investigating the issue with that also.

For the record I MIGHT be bias as I prefer to ride with the wind in my face and wind hitting me mid-chest. I run a taller windshield in the winter to extend my riding season until I hit freezing temperatures.

XC or XR with Forged bars will have buffeting. The Forged bars on my bike now have the JTD lowers, Klockwerks Flip shield, and I have zero buffeting now. I'm dry in the rain and warm when its cold. I can hear my speakers at 80 mph. Less than $500 for the upgrades and very satisfied.

If you ride the XR with Forged bars than you can achieve the same results as there are flip shields available from Klock as well and the JTD lowers are a winner.

I'm on a 13 XCT with stock windshield. I have not experienced any buffeting, even up to 100+ mph. Also had a cross wind and have not felt it at all. Like lostintexas said, it is subjective. It will depend on what bike you came from and what you're used to.

^ I agree. 2013 and I can't say I've ever ridden a machine with a little buffeting as this has with the large windshield. Now when I put on the medium size one it goes up and my wife complains as she gets it more with that one too. The smallest sport windshield...I use it around town when it's warm is about all!

I went through three windshield till I decided on the Ness Flip. Works best for me. But it's how you sit too. I find when I put my feet all the way forward on these large floor boars the wind deflects up my legs and hits me right in the face at highway speeds. Your height how you sit there are lots of variables. You need seat time and try and try different windshields until you get what's best for you.
