Default Forged guards colored tops

My XR has the chrome tops on the forged engine guards. I am going to black things out a bit and noticed that the XC that I have seen have color matching tops. Since the tops are plastic and powdercoating is out of the question, has anybody had their top covers painted and if so, how is the paint holding up? I know that prep is half of the battle but that is a large area of exposed guard and I don't want it looking terrible in a year.

If what you are saying is that there are chrome covers on the the bike now, they are an accessory that can be removed to expose the factory matching paint that is the same color of the bike.

I think the Cross Country got color matched tops and the Cross Roads is all chrome. Unless I am really missing something, if I take my chrome tops off, I am left with the bar itself.
