Default Argh!!! HMD Really 2.5", Other XC Pullbacks, Popcorn, Frustrated

I'm looking for about 2" more ("that's what she said").

I have an XCT, and I want some pullbacks, preferably in black. I don't want mini-apes, I'm not looking for a custom look, etc. -- I just want some pullbacks. I'm 5'9", with a 30" inseam, and the last time I bought a dress shirt (maybe 10 years ago) my arm length was 33" - 34".

And I've spent hours (days?) reading posts on the subject.

- The official Vic XC(T) 2" pullbacks are $299 (discounts available). The negatives are that they don't come in black, and they don't do anything for the wrist angle (which I think is angled back too much, i.e., I think I'd like the grips angled less back on the ends).

- HMD's HMD-40 bars ( http://www.hmd520.com/category/XC-Parts-32 ) are $349 (discounted every December). Mike notes on that page: "The bars in the picture, has the bars at the highest setting. The bars can adjust down 2.5-3" more giving you a 2.5" pullback. The hand postion has been changed to give you a more comfortable feeling." And that's the price for black (chrome being $25 more).

Nonetheless, like the bike in the pics there, many (most?) people who have these bars seem to have them up high, like mini-apes. Maybe most buyers are tall and have long arms. Maybe that "more comfortable hand position" is a downward angle that invites having the bars higher up -- I don't know.

And despite the "...2.5" pullback..." when adjusted down, I've read comments such as jwflash's ( https://www.victoryforums.com/showthread.php?t=14163 ), who, when asked why he was selling the HMD-40s, said, "They do give more pullback than the stock bars and look waaaaay better! Unfortunately I felt like I needed more (pullback) so I went with the Victory 2" pullback bars." I read another comment (which I can't find now) from someone else, who said that the HMDs didn't provide any pullback. Maybe that guy didn't adjust them down properly. I don't know, but I'm puzzled regarding how 2.5" pullback can be less than the Vic's 2" pullback... and that's from someone who's had both on his XC.

- The Ness bars that I think are for the XC(T) are the "Modular Cross Country Apes, black" ( http://shop.arlenness.com/p-8123-mod...pes-black.aspx ), and are $450; I don't know whether discounts are available.

I also don't know whether these are, like the HMD-40s, meant solely to be mini-apes (as in their name), or whether they can function as pullbacks, if just lowered. I like the fact that there's some built-in adjustment for the grip part of the bars, but I'm not sure how that effects the in-out angle, vs. the up-down angle of that area.

- BR's Custom Bars (e.g., http://www.brcustomcycles.com/Bagger_Bars_FRB6.php ) are in about this price range, too. That's nice that you can specify a lot of dimensions yourself, i.e., really customize these bars. On the down side, that's a fair chunk of change to spend on bars that you can't adjust. What if you get the specification wrong (and there's a lot to specify).

- Moving up, you have Heli-Bars ( https://www.helibars.com/product/hor...lebars-victory ) for $750 (discounted a bit every once in a while). These provide ultimate adjustability, and the few folks who have these (at least the ones who've posted) all seem to love them, love being to fine-tune the adjustments, etc.

On the down side regarding the Heli-Bars, as the late US Senator Everitt Dirksen is reputed to have said, "A billion here, a billion there, and pretty soon you're talking real money." Also, they're not available in black.

Me, this all reminds me of popcorn at the movies. "For 50 cents more, you can upgrade to a medium size." Well, why not, reasonable enough. But then, "For 50 cents more, you can upgrade that medium to a large size." And so it goes, on up to Jumbo Family, Free Refills or something.

That's my rant. I'm disappointed that I can't seem to get what I want -- either not-very-expensive black handlebars that are really pullback-only oriented, or a something like the Heli-Bars... but for half that amount, and in black. Or just some $100 - $150 risers -- forget the whole new handlebar thing -- which is what I added on my previous two bikes (in which case maybe I should have purchased an XR, instead, because you can't do risers on an XCT). Or maybe I should just shut up, bite the bullet, and spring for the Heli's.

Anyone care to comment, especially anyone who's had both the HMD-40s and the Vic 2" pullbacks on their bike (hopefully not at the same time)?

Cheers,

Bill P.

So this is just a thought but take your factory bars to a machine shop. Have them modify them by adding 2-2 1/2" to the length. You could also have the grip angle altered to suit you while you are there. Shouldn't cost that much. Just an idea.

That appears to be all they did on the Vic 2" bars.

Thanks for the thought. Interesting. I like the part about altering the grip angle, but the part about adding length -- you don't think that would look too sloppy, where the addition was made?

I was unable to find bars with the dimensions I wanted. I just sent my request to Vic Baggers and the nailed them exactly how I wanted.

Upside is the quality is great AND they were cheaper than HMD or others.

Thanks -- I forgot about them, but just took a look ( http://www.vicbaggers.com/handlebars.html ). Did your customized bars start out life as the Vigilante or the Tarzanz style?

When I ordered they only had the top set on the site. The bottom ones are actually my bars (99%sure).

I just sent him a pic of the top swoop and the desired dimensions and they made them.

Thanks for the info. I may have to take some measurements, and call or email them.

Well, I'm in PA. No heat in the garage. Hopefully within a week or two I will be installing the HMD Pullback bars OR HMD-40 I believe they are numbered.

I can take a picture or two of them both laying beside each other for comparision but it may or may not show the difference with the HMD bars having the J bend in them.
I am going for a more "pullback" feel than "up" or "ape" feel. So maybe I can come up with a way to take a few side shots of before "stock" and after "HMD" the installed bars.

Bars turned out sweet.

I went with 2" forward and about 2.5" up (6'4" so I have long arms)

Appreciate any help you can give me, any light you can shed on this. Thanks.
