Question Have you had any issues with the lack of Victory dealers?

I'm going to try to word this so as to not get a bunch of folks riled up and get flamed in the process as sometimes happens on some forums out there. Here it goes......

I'm sitting on the fence trying to decide which touring bike would be best for me. I like Victory and I like Harley. I like some things about both bikes, I don't feel that either one is junk.

I know that Victory has a lot of advantages over a comparable Harley but there are tons of Harley dealers all over the country, with Victory, not so much.

My local Victory dealer sells, 4-wheelers, snowmobiles, chainsaws, farm machinery, etc... and the mechanic there by his own admission, has told me that he hardly ever works on the Victory bikes, just oil and filter changes mostly. (I'm not sure how good a mechanic he is either).

Now this is probably due mostly to Victory's low maintenance and good design I suppose but what about if you're out touring outside of your home turf? And there aren't any Victory shops around, is this something to consider?

Have any of you fellows who have bought a Victory touring bike had any problems with a breakdown while away on a trip and if so, how did you make out?

I know that any machine can fail, and I've got a pretty good hunch that these new Cross bikes would be about the safest bet out there for a dependable ride but I'd just like to hear it from you fellows who have actually bought and ridden one for awhile. Thanks!

Sounds like you know what to do but are trying to talk yourself out of it. They are VERY maintenance free but there is still a very good dealer network out there. There is even a app for your smart phone called Victory Rides. Gives you dealerships and a lot more. I sold my Road King for a XC and have never looked back except to make sure my friends on Harley's are still back there......LOL. But really this is a great bike and I still loved my Harley just glad I made the swap.

What you are getting is what I call Salesman's "Service Center Fudd". It's more of an artificial "specter" than it is any REAL issue.

As folks have pointed out, something that does not break down doesn't need a bunch of service centers. However, given the fact that ANYTHING can break, you do need to consider your options. There are a LOT of Polaris dealers out there and even though they may not (officially) be a Victory dealer, many (most) of them can (and WILL) service Victory bikes.

Additionally, almost ANY metric or other dealer can and often will service Victorys in an emergency. So, rather than asking if there are any Victory dealerships in specific areas, you may want to re-phrase your question as "Are there any motorcycle service centers in those same areas" and your logically conclusion will be...of course there are.

Yeah, I wasn't sure exactly how to phrase my question but you know what I was getting at. These bikes are so well engineered that I'm probably losing sleep for nothing here.

I've been such a split-personality nut job over the last year trying to make up my mind which bike would be the smarter choice. The Harley name brand can be a strong selling point for a lot of people shopping for a new bike, the whole "lifestyle" thing ya know.

But after this weekend's rides, there's no disputing that those two touring bikes were noticeably cramped, I now realize that that's a big deal for me, and then there was the shaking at every stop sign. I think that that was actually starting to wear a bit thin, my wife said that she didn't much care for it. She thought that the ride was ok but the shaking at stops, not so much.

So, I guess that I'm back on the Victory band-wagon. If I bought a Harley it would probably just be to fit in and be part of a "culture/family" or something equally illogical but at the end of the day I've got to admit that the Victory touring bikes pretty much beat out the Harleys in most areas, the important ones to me anyway.

The Harleys seem to have better paint and handlebar switchgear but that's about it. I have to give Victory props for creating a powerful, comfortable and reliable touring bike.

I'm really stoked that Victory has decided to put ABS on all of their touring bikes, that's a big deal in my books. Good on you Victory!

Humbucker - Read my comparison thread for a bit more detailed guidance on H-D vs. Victory. After you buy your Vic, I believe that you may be pleasantly surprised to learn that those in the "Harley Lifestyle" have been VERY acceptable of us Vic riders. People are people and 99.9% of the H-D owners I have meet have welcomed me with open arms.

If you want to take the service manual with you on trips; you can easily fit it on a memory stick. For the 2011 XC/XR you can download it HERE. I'm sure the 2012 manuals will be available in the not-too-distant future.

I just bought a hard copy of the XC manual. I can't get to that link from the work computer but I am very interested in having a soft copy. Anyone else use this link with success?

Does it take you to the Zshare site? What do you get when you click on the link? It has worked for others in the past with no trouble. I redid the link shortly after posting it. Have you tried it since I edited it?

So you have noticed that those of us that have had a less than stellar experience with Polaris/Victory as regards our new bikes and have posted that fact on these forums are lambasted and crucified as heretics... well welcome to the new world of biking. Seems as though one has to drink the company "koolade" to be accepted on the "forum" network about those bikes... doesn't matter what brand. If one does not agree to go with the flow they are labeled a "troublemaker" or a "whiner" even if their complaints are valid. It's the new need for acceptance and political correctness fostered over the past decade where everyone gets a trophy... the "participation is as important as winning" mentality has bred a growing core of lemmings who have no tolerance for any disruption or "disrespect" as it were.

As I have mentioned, this is true of most buyers of all the different brands of all consumer goods... nobody wants to identify with a brand that isn't the best, much less one that has problems. I hope that you ride each and every type of bike out there that satisfies your new found interest in motorcycles and pick the one that you personally favor. Don't depend on any of these forums for all the facts.

Speaking of facts... my experience with having problems touring on my new Victory Premium Touring bike is that the support network is lacking in availability and expertise with servicing these bikes... BUT even worse in my experience is that Polaris/Victory is VERY lacking in Customer Service and Support. They think that "normal" means it's OK for a problem to exist... and their only response is that it is a dealer issue so take it back to the dealer where you bought it... no matter that you may live in Florida and are having a problem while touring in Canada.

Just watch and read the venom now that I have once again stated my position. The bike is great, but be prepared to work on it yourself if you want it done right the first time!

Smile it's all about, "Perspective..."

I wouldn't class myself as a 'tried and true world motorcycle tourer' as you'll read about on this and many forums (my favorite is ADVrider for ride reports) but my 'perspective' on service of any vehicle (two wheels or four) is, "it depends."

I've ridden with many folks on a variety of bikes and have experienced and assisted in many bike problems. We've spent many hours in almost all the different bike establishments waiting for a cable or an electrical problem to be fixed. My 'perspective' on all of these is that there are good experiences...and some 'less than good' experiences. However, all of them have provided great stories (the 'not so good' ones usually make better stories) once the trouble is resolved and you're back at home or on another adventure.

As mentioned many times, ride all the bikes you like, build some kind of 'criteria' of what makes a bike fit your 'current perspective' on riding, and then take the plunge! I ride with mostly HD owners and GW riders...they are all great people and all of us consider ourselves better mechanics or CEOs (than those that are actually doing the job) when it comes to servicing or responding to a biker's woes, but the big picture is that we all share a love for riding and if we did all have trouble-free bikes and/or service assistance then we'd have to complain about: food, weather, hotels/motels, cagers, cell phones, texters, weather...wait, I said that one already...well, you get the picture.

I hope you get a bike soon and maybe someday we'll cross paths. If and when we do, please fill me in on your dealer network issues and maintenance problems you've experienced...did I mention I heard you should carry a Sav-Ur-Ride clutch kit? Well, let me tell ya...
