Cross Country Backrest Woes
Last Monday I purchased a Victory OEM passenger backrest for my new XC from a Victory dealer. I found the dealer on the internet, and he had a price that was a few dollars lower than what I could get locally. I received the backrest Friday afternoon and was excited to get home and put it on. The guy was super easy to work with, provided good customer service, fast shipping, and the backrest was received undamaged.
But here’s the rub. The damn thing is made in Taiwan!!! It looks OK when mounted, but that’s because you can’t see the underside where the welds are half a$$ed, and the chrome is crap… and did I say it was made in Taiwan by Küryakyn?!?!
On a side note: I know Küryakyn was once a good company that made quality stuff, but not any more. Their chrome peels and rusts in months. This is from personal experience with their products and that of a few close friends.
Anyway, I can’t believe that I just dropped $500 on a piece of Taiwan crap that will be rusty in 6 months. A Küryakyn backrest for just about any other bike is like $200-$250. I feel like I was just given the shaft by someone who I thought was my friend… Victory.
Anybody got any good leads for another manufacturer that makes a quality passenger backrest and luggage rack? I’m ready to take a hit reselling this thing on eBay just to get something of good quality. Something that’s going to do the job and still be shiny in 5 years.
