Default Strange engine noise

I ride my 2013 XCT in stop and go traffic in NYC almost daily. Every time the engine temperature reaches 88 to 93 degrees, I hear a strange light knocking noise when I rev the engine. Like I said, this only happens when the engines gets really hot. On cooler days, or if there're no traffic, or if I'm riding on the highway, she sounds normal. Can anyone tell me why she makes this sound. You don't hear the light knocks when she idle, only when you hit throttle.

You mean the ambient (outside) temp, on the temp display, not the engine temp.

You must be one tough dude. I live in the Albany area. My buddy and I used to do NYC lunch runs -- pizza in the Village or Brooklyn, for instance -- half a dozen times a year. Also an excuse to ride down the Taconic, Saw Mill, etc. Since I got the XCT (he rides a Beemer), we've cut way back: has to be a real cool summer day when our schedules are free, because the heat in the city is just too much on that bike for me. Getting out of town in stop and go traffic -- either on the Henry Hudson or the FDR -- is a real torture test on hot days.

From what you're describing it sounds like detonation or "ping" which used to be very common on carbureted engines that were improperly timed. If that's what you're hearing it's a VERY BAD THING, especially on a leaned out EFI engine. Normally you wouldn't hear a ping at idle and seldom at constant power or cruise, only when the engine goes under load like running through the gears.

Although I personally don't advocate disconnecting the O2 sensors you might want to give that a try and see if it enriches the mixture enough to fix the problem. A slightly richer mixture might do the trick. If that doesn't work I'd suggest a "Parade Fan". http://love-jugs.com/pricing/

The other thing you can do to try and help out this situation is to make sure you have top grade premium fuel. My last bike (Vulcan) seemed to have a similar issue, also added octane boost to combat engine pre-ignition.

Just a thought, for summer months go with 20w50 oil. Don't know if it will make a difference over the Vic 20w 40 but for a little bit of $$ I'd try that.

I'd be very careful about octane booster. I've dealt with a lot of the stuff over the years attempting to get 100 octane engines to run on auto fuel and found that without exception they're snake oil. No octane booster manufacturer will state even off the record what type of octane increase you might expect. Add into the mix today's ethanol fuels and you've got real unknown.

Having made the above statement I'll add that increasing octane WILL NOT cure an inherent over heating problem nor will changing the weight of the oil. The bottom line is if you're having detonation issues due to over heating you will have cool the engine.

Any one with a CC should take there lowers off in the hot summer months if they do a lot of city riding. Stay out of stop an go traffic as much as possible.

I agree cooler temps and air movement are the best answer. That said when my former bike ran in warm weather and had some pre-ignition happening, if I added octane boost it did not completely eliminate the problem but it did help.

It's not a "pinging" sound. It's more of a thump sound when I rev it in hot temperature weather, 80 degrees and up. I use 93 octane and also use the recommended victory oil. It runs beautifully in cooler weather up to 60 degrees without the strange sound. It also happened on the first warm weather, without any engine modifications (complete stock). Is this normal on these bikes? Now I have the new stage 1 exhaust with EFI calibration, it's still makes that strange sound when I rev in hot weather conditions.

I guess if it's not an engine knock or ping I'm at a loss. I think your best bet would be to drop it off at a Victory shop and have them see if they can replicate the noise and diagnose it. If it's heat related it could cause you some spendy damage.
