Default What's the difference...

I'd like to save some money and pick up a used 2009 but I'm not sure if I will be as satisfied unless it has the "upgraded" 2012 engine features.
What are the changes / "upgrades" I should be concerned with?

It depends on which bike you're looking at. For example in 2011 the entire model line got the 106 / 6-speed and the oil change intervals for the touring bikes increased from 2500 miles to 5000 miles.

ABS is a big deal. I wouldnt buy another bike without it. Its only available on newer Vics.

If you really want to save some money; get an 03-05 Vegas or KP. Those early Freedom motors are almost bulletproof. The pro mech's say it all the time.

If you insist on a newer model all you really need to know is the pre 11's didn't have the neutral assist finder and the 12 and newer touring models have the ABS brakes.

Outside of that it's really all about what you want. Touring vs cruiser vs semi-hot rod cruiser (Hammer/Jackpot).

Just because the newer bikes have more cubic inches doesn't necessarily make them better in any way. Remember, just like cars, the bike companies also need to deal with the EPA regs as the years go by. Much of the bigger cubes are eaten up by those regs and emission controls. Of course that doesn't mean they stay that way for more than ten seconds after the customer gets it.

The two main things have already been hit, really. Maintenance and the ABS (the neutral finder too, I suppose).

99/100, I say go used. Only reason I bought my XR new was I received too good of a deal and I was too impatient to wait. If power is a concern, my wife was looking at an '08 KP with the 100 that just had stage one done to it and she had no problems keeping up with the 106 in mine on that, even pulling away a few times. More often than not, you'll save yourself thousands on the purchase cost...and likely a thousand or two in accessories if you find one that has stuff you like already. And people just don't put many miles on bikes in general so longevity won't be a concern, especially given how bulletproof these engines/trannies are.

My Vegas is for sale. 2009 8 ball with a lot of custom parts. Ebay listing expired, but search the Minneapolis craigslist for 2009 victory vegas and it'll pop up. =)

I bought an '09 Vegas Premium Low last fall, never sold so new in all respects other than actual model year. I have been extremely satisfied with her. Neutral is so easy to find I can't imagine needing help. Brakes worked like a dream a few weekends back when my husband braked for a dog walker (actually for the dog) who hadn't even gotten to the curb yet let alone started to cross. I was unprepared and hit the brakes hard; felt the back wheel shift a bit then recover nicely.

As for power, it has similar ccs as my Fiat and a helluva lot more torque
