Default Iron butts input needed!

Hey everyone, getting ready to plan a ride down to Myrtle Beach in about two weeks for bike week. The ride will cover about 1100 miles round trip and was just looking on some input as for things you can't go without on that kind of long distance since this will be a first for me riding this far. I will do a pre-inspection of my Hammer before rolling out. However extras I bring along will be limited to back pack size so I want to be effiecent about what I do bring. Any tools I should plan on packing?

Honestly you don't need to bring anything extra. Its pretty simple. First check your route with an online mapping program to verify your mileage. 1100 will be a safe mileage. I stopped every 2 hours for fuel and drink. About 5 to 10 minutes max. Then I made a morning and evening meal stop of about 1/2 hour each. I did it in under 18 hours. The biggest thing is make sure you're well rested before you leave. Remember all your gas stop receipts and witness signatures.

I rode at speeds between 70 and 75 most all day when I did mine. You may want to verify your route with the state DOT's for construction. Try to plan any of your big citys before or after the rush hours as best you can.

Remember the time starts with your first gas receipt. Do that is the last thing you want to do before you start. And the first thing you want to do at your last gas stop.

First off go into your profile and add where you live.
Maybe there are some other in your neck of the woods that are going.

#1 if your staying at a motel call them and see if you can ship them some of your clothes. Most are very trust worth.
#2 the tail of the dragon is not far a way and worth the ride up there 318 curves in 11 miles.
#3 cops are pricks about loud pipes so be carefully
#4 Bring a helmet for the rain and if you travel to the dragon.
#5 you will not travel more then 50 miles in a day
#6 bars stay open late I mean late
#7 cold in the morning and at night
#8 ask how to get to a town called Mullen when you get there ask some one where the bed and breakfast is. They have a great lunch and if you make it ask for some buttermilk pipe its all most better then sex.
#9 I know you will be going to Suck Bang and Blow
#10 ship your clothes home ask where a ups is

You'll have fun and a good drunk nice people and maybe you'll see the ocean I did when I looked between two hotels other then that never saw is

Thanks for the advice. As for the clothes I have a solution for that is someone I know is going to trailer their bike down so I am going to toss him my bag. The cops in VA are always a ass pain. I will add Mullen on my places to look into. The Dragon is always a trip I wanted to do but I have a feeling after getting down to Myrtle the booze will be flowing a bit too much to get out that way. Going to bring a second helmet just incase I make a "friend" while down there

If you have a little extra time you might want to do the Chesapeake Bay bridge/tunnel and down the outer banks of NC. Awesome ride when the weather is good. There's a hefty toll for the bridge/tunnel but it's a pretty sweet ride across the bay. No helmet law in SC so you don't really need to bring an extra pot unless your good sense tells you otherwise. And by the way, Myrtle Beach is about 400 miles from Deals Gap,TN (the dragons tail) so you better dust on some extra monkey butt powder! Enjoy your ride brother!

Are you running 301 all the way to Bowling Green then the bypass to 95? I ask because of traffic on 95S from your neck of the woods. Start time is imparative as to what traffic you COULD hit where. 4 of us are getting ready for our SS1000 in a couple weeks and I found that mapping out on google maps then saving the short link allowed pretty good estimating for our pit stops.

This is our first one as well (with 4 of us there has been alot of Q&A getting ready ) and I made a couple trial runs of 500-600 mile rides just working out kinks while I was working up in Lexington Park to see what works and what doesnt. Thats why I was asking about your route, we made excellent time down 301/Bowling Green bypass to hit 95S and it was hammer down at that point (Plenty of fuel prior to onramp there)

What type of milage you get? I know for my TC if I am running 80 with traffic on 95 I loose about 5mpg vs 70ish keeping me about 38/39. I would take a trial run to find out, every stop for gas is 10 min lol. Only reason I say this is for good planning for your pit stops, I routed all mine with ones that were right off the interstate not to get fooled by the gas here and its 2.3 miles up. Remember to hydrate at your fuel points! Carmex and a little sun block went a long ways on my test ride. We put a 30 minute rest/meal at the 6 and 12hr points on our route, the rest were gas, water and go.

Tools? You ride a VIC right??? You don't need tools! JK, I have kept a small vice grip, hex key set, phillps/straight screw driver and cresent wrench in my tool bag. So far, it's all I needed. Go bigger if you want.

Thanks Tim! My plan is to head the 301 route to avoid the DC area traffic leaving out around my house around 12pm. I am going to try and make gas stops all around the 120 mile mark interval I expect gas mileage to be about 36-37mpg running the bike at about 80-90 mph as much as I can.

I even own a trailer however thanks to a friend of mine and his big mouth lol we are both going to ride all the way down together.

It was a good couple of days made it down there with no issue's just a little sunburn the first day lol. The next two days weather was a bit overcast in Myrtle and the nicest day had to be the Sunday we left.

I meet a group of guys I know who all ride choppers and hung with them for the weekend. Made me glad I own a Victory to be honest lol. The first day down in Myrtle we rode to the beaver bar and maybe did 20 miles since we had rolled out from the hotel and one of the other guys with a Big Dog had a shaft inside his transmission shear off and was out for the rest of the trip. Two other guys had Ironhorse choppers one was having clutch issues and the other one was spuddering and popping randomly. I met a couple who was on a Harley and we were talking he rode 2 hours to get there and was saying how he had to put his bike in the shop right before to have it ready and a friend of his with a Harley had his coil melt on him so they knew a good spot to get a tow if I needed one, haha no thanks my Victory ran like a champ the entire time.


Overall I am not sure if I'm going to go down for it next year, it was fun but it's such a commercialized event. I think it would of been fun to just go a different weekend with the bike. I prefer old school bike rally's where you ride, camp, and party at night. This was my first time going to Myrtle and seeing people in all of the Sons of Anarchy and Full throttle Saloon apparel was kind of a turn off for me, you get the idea most people just want to look like bikers and not actually ride or have any knowledge of them. The police did seem friendly though and weren't harassing the bikers.

Planning my next trip now, looking like a trip up north to somewhere like NH at the end of June.
