Default Iron Butt get together?

Anyone in the omaha area want to get together and do an iron butt ride? I'm thinking the basic 1000 miles in 24 hours... Maybe head east from omaha or south.

I wanna put some serious miles on my vegas, and I figure this will be a good way to do that and meet up with some locals. Go 500 then come back.

Nate

Yea I just checked out their website and we could put together a ride and make it all legal and what not, in accordance with the association. I was thinking a good run from the omaha area would be to Rapid City south dakota. Google maps shows is as a 528 mile run from omaha to rapid city.

I think a good plan would be to take off early, maybe 5 or 6 AM and keep a decent but legal speed up, average 75-80 MPH and it could be done without getting too fatigued, it would still put us back in Omaha after midnight with the rest stops in between and what not.

I might be interested in this. Did you have a date in mind? I did one with my father last summer. We left at 4am and got back into town about 10:30pm.....and that is with him breaking down, which cost us over an hour. We're planning on doing the 1500 miler in October so this could be a good warm up. Ha ha.

(there's another forum with regional sub-forums that you would probably get better responses from)

when you set your date make sure to pick your alternate date for weather at the same time so all agree. We had a 4 rider group and sure enough 5 days prior to departure the primary date was 80% thunderstorms over 75% of the route... The alternate date was then activated SHOULD the weather guessers actually become correct. They wernt. Day before the ride it droped to 20% on about 1/4 of the route. We executed the primary date got very little rain on us during the SS1K and had a great time..

Im adding the link for the archive of wisdom.. Alot of good points in there to help you plan your ride... Good luck to you all and dont forget the tirp report!

I'm putting together a route now,

Start in Omaha, around 0600 ish.
1st Leg- Omaha to Beresford SD, 150 miles (2 hours) stop and eat breakfast? 0800
2nd leg- Beresford SD, to Mitchell SD, 100 miles (1.5 hours) stop and stretch 1000
3rd leg- Mitchell SD, to Murdo SD, 150 miles, (2 hours) stop and stretch 1200, snack?
4th leg- Murdo SD, to Rapid City SD, 140 miles, (2 hours) stop and stretch, eat! 1400
5th leg- Rapid City SD, to Murdo SD, 140 miles, (2 hours) 1700
6th leg- Murdo SD, to Mitchell SD, 150 miles, (2 hours) 1930
7th leg- Mitchell SD, to Beresford SD, 100 miles (1.5 hours) 2100
8th leg- Beresford SD, to Omaha NE, 150 miles (2 hours) 2330

This is with half hour breaks at each stop, and around 70 mph speeds. Seem doable?

Route may change, I am coordinating with others on the overall plan and dates, if any one else in the omaha area wants in, just say so and we can coordinate.

The planning was half of the battle and fun I think. About to do a Tour of Honor/SS1K combo in 3 weeks but only got one rider with me on it. Should be a blast seeing 7 memorial sites in VA, riding 1000 miles and doing it under 24hrs.. This one is going to be challenging for sure. A good plan leads to a great ride.

We get our average milage that all of the group bikes are good run with (i.e. 150-160, im a 5 gal tank), then use google maps spreading out our way points to pick our gas stations out keeping them to the larger stations/truck stop right off the road. Thats how we did our stop points anyway keeping in mind as a group each stop will take a little longer and minutes count. We also set up in advance as a group that first pit was a gas and go, 2nd gas pit was bathroom etc. Worked well.

Also, if your looking for more the merrier. You can have folks join your ride at one of your pit stops say point C, they just have to have their own witnesses since their riding with you and of course return to point C for their completion. Then they can sight you all as folks that rode with them and make it easier for the folks validating your event.

Hope this helps you coordinate a good ride. I know for us, once done the paperwork doesnt seem as important as was the fun of the ride... There are quite a few folks out on the forum here that have done some SS's so if you got planning quesitons I would ask in the general forum. Have fun and safe ridin!

Tim
