Default Harley HD1 Program

So this time it looks like Harley took a page out of the Victory playbook. IIRC, Victory used to offer a build to order program like this, but apparently scrapped it. I really like the idea of putting the parts on a new bike that *I* want rather than having to rebuild the thing after I buy it at my expense.

It's only available for 2 bikes though so it is VERY restrictive and of no use for the majority of HD buyers. I can see the #1 reason for NOT doing it is inventory. Stocking lot's of vendors parts in a Victory factory would present problems with stocking but vendors might go out of their way to support it. Additionally, teaching the assembly line how to install each vendor's part would take time and might create additional confusion on the production floor. One of the reasons Victory is price competitive is because they implemented the "Henry Ford" model of repetitive assembly of common parts.

To go from common parts to "whatever the F you want..." parts simply mean adding in-efficiencies to the line for...little (if any) additional profit. It could also alienate their distribution network who's RELIES on 3rd-party accessories in order to stay in business. HD can "force" their dealers to do this but I am not certain Victory would have that same leverage. BTW, HD dealer's are NOT embracing this with "open arms". Rather, they see it as simply "one more thing corporate is FORCING down their throats"...

It's not just any victory.... It's MY Victory!

That's just it, there doesn't have to be a lot of extra inventory. Victory already stocks three types of wheels for it's touring bikes. 1 spoked and two mags. This is the same with handlebars, there is a standard, a 2" pullback, and ape hangers. They stock all of them for their touring line now, so what's the issue? They also stock things like crash bars that could come on the bike if a rider wants them.

I'm not suggesting making Victory carry a bunch of aftermarket stuff, just normal plug and play parts that are already used in their production line. From my perspective, letting a user choose which one is put on a bike only helps Victory by learning which parts people actually want on their bikes and increase its sales by tapping into a few of us iconoclasts without losing a dime.
