Default IBA Memorial Ride

Well today marks 11 years, alot of thoughts and prayers going out today for sure.. I just happen to stumble across this on the IBA site tonight and thought I would repost should anyone be looking for a reason to ride an IBA SS1K this month.. Yes, it would be short notice for planning but I am sure there are enough riders out here that have done them in the past to help if you have questions. I for one would be glad to help answer any questions.. simply shoot a PM or open a thread.

Iron Butt Association Annual Memorial 1000 Ride

Each year the lives of many of our fellow motorcycle riders and loved ones are cut short. In their memory, a group of the World’s Toughest Riders will participate in a Saddle Sore 1000 on one of three weekends, September 22-23, September 29-30, or October 6-7. We hope to have riders participating in all 50 states, in all of the Canadian provinces, and in several countries around the world. Thess dates were selected because the weather across the world is generally good—not too hot and not too cold.

The IBA will issue a special certificate for this event.

To specially honor our fallen brethren, we’re asking each you to find one of your motorcycle friends who is not an IBA member to ride the Saddle Sore with you. This will give you the opportunity to mentor the ‘newbie’ in the skill of route planning, navigation, hydration, and ATGATT before and during the ride. If the two of you ride the same route and submit your documentation together, special pricing will apply for the certification—there will be a $10 reduction for each of you in the normal fee!

The person for whom you’re riding does not have to be a former IBA member, or even a former motorcycle rider. It can be anybody that is special to you; somebody that has had an impact on your life.

What better way to honor our departed friends than to bring new members into the sport we all love. This will be a fun event! IBA will issue special certificates for the mentor and the mentee, and a special patch for the event. A video of the event will be produced. A special website will list all the participants and for whom they’re riding. We’re working on other ideas to make this event special.

So reserve one of the Memorial Ride weekends now. Recruit a mentee.

Let’s ‘ride the Memorial.’

Send me an email signing up for the ride, with the name of the special person you’re honoring, and a short paragraph of who they were and why you’re riding for them.

Giving one more plug for the IBA Memorial Ride scheduled for weekends of September 22nd/23rd, 29th/30th or October 6th/7th. If you are unable to ride on those weekends it is fine to set it for the week, the weekends are targets to help coordinate the ride nationwide for the memorial effort.

This is an annual ride to honor a departed friend or loved one. Also, in hopes to increase the IBA awareness, try to enlist one new rider to accompany you as a mentee. I was able to bring on a new IBA rider for this event (who also lost a family member on two wheels) and we will be coupling it with the Tour of Honor ride for Virginia stopping at 7 memorials within the 24hr SS1K rules. It will be a privledge to carry my fathers memorial flag in honor of him (WWII US Army vet) and my uncle 23 yrs USAF Ret.

Hope to see some additional names on the list so this can truley be a NATIONWIDE ride, if you have questions shoot a PM or email Howard thorugh the IBA web link.

Well me and the neighbor rode our memorial ride Saturday the 22nd using the Tour of Honor extreme ride visiting 7 memorials and logging 1040 in 21.5 hours. I can safely say it was a very moving ride as the memorials we visited touched both of us (both prior military) on mulitiple levels. I rode for my Dad and Uncle both Vets and passed on and Phil rode for the many brave service members he laid to rest while he was part of the honor guard up in D.C.

If you get a chance to ride this year for it great but if not this year, would strongly recommend it next year.

As for the Tour of Honor http://www.tourofhonor.com/ which also contributes to Wounded Warrior, what a great route that turned out to be. Will be posting more in the Hampton Roads VA thread on it but the highlightss, we visited:

- A Lincoln memorial in Richmond that looked to be a very good civial war musem we will go back and see.
- National D-Day memorial in Bedford VA (WOW is all I can say). A must see at some point in time plus a BRPW entrance is 5 miles up.
- Medal of Honor memorial at V-Tech.. Something to see for sure...
- Vetrans of Military service memorial at Bristol VA. What hit me here was the line "Dedicated in hopes that all will have a place to remember" wow!
- Pentagon memorial - for those at the pentagon and flight 77 with a lighted bench for each person lost. A MUST see at night!!!
- Iwo Jima statue Arlington, Virginia. Don't need to say much but see it at night!

So we combine them all into a TOH/SS1K memorial ride and it proved to be very memorable. Just throwing some feedback and promo out there for individuals or groups. If anyone wants to know anymore about it PM me or post here!

Be safe all!

Tim
