Friday night, I get home from work, do the family thing for a bit. After sitting around for a while watching my wife watch things on TV that I deem as foolish, I decide that I'm going for a short ride. I leave out temps are great, wind is better. I get in a rather enjoyable hour or so in the saddle. Get home, go to bed. Get up Saturday, go check on the bike............WTF, where is my tag. As a matter of fact, where is my bracket. Apparently, on my ride, my side mount bracket just broke off. I have no idea where it might be. The previous owner had installed a generic side mount that caused the bracket to bend and create a weak point. In the great state of NC, there is no way to order a replacement plate except in person. Office hours are Mon-Fri 8-5. I work out of town Mon-Fri. Now, I either have to go through all of the power of attorney BS so that my wife can get a replacement or take a day off. The day off portion, gonna be hard since I'm booked solid until the first week in August. When I finally do get a tag, I don't have a mount. The side mounts that are made specifically for our bikes are extremely over-priced. The best "deal" that I have found is $175, for a bracket, a damn bracket. So, with my ghetto ingenuity I decided there is no way, I'm going to wait until mid-August before I ride again. Went in my little shop, performed side street surgery with a few pieces of sheet metal that I had laying around. Then remembered that since I ordered a specialized plate in January, my old plate is still in the house. So, for now I have a not so truly legal tag and a bracket that will most likely hold up (fingers crossed) until I get the right stuff again.
Sorry for my rant.
If anybody has a good lead on a decent side mount license plate bracket, please let me know.
